The comet becomes more and more fragmented as it approaches Earth, due to gravity effects.
Its nucleus is split appart and its trajectory has changed "spectacularly" last time it passed near Earth ,5 years ago.
I think it will hit us |

yes comet hits u then u are dead ? you want this stuff ? nah nothing will happen, life will be the same. |

Here's what I found:
NASA's NEO (Near Earth Object) page is now listing the following:
1)73P/Schwassmann-Wachmann 3-BD 2)2006-May-11 21:53 ± 11:11
3)33.7/0.0867 0.0/0.0001
4)14.79 14.78 3
I know it looks like gibberish, but note the 3rd and 4th rows..that is the
Miss Distance (LD,AU) The most likely (Nominal) and minimum possible (Minimum) miss distances are given in LD (Lunar Distance) and AU.
Please note that the Minimum Miss Distance is 0.0/0.0001. 0.0001AU is about 9300 miles.
Washington is calling in the military over this. Can we shoot it down? If it hits, it will destroy an area as big as Texas and cause global cooling for over a hundred years.
If it hits, it will strike about one hundred miles west of Los Angeles.
cometary objects impact calculations
This was classified but I must let it out. I am from La Silla Paranal Observatory. I think I will dissapear for a couple of weeks even if they try to find me they won't. May you all find peace and saftey
Impact times have been calculated in advance. There is still some uncertainly in the precise times, so a column of uncertainty is also given. In general the smaller the uncertainty, the bigger the fragment.

In the table the angle E-J-F is the Earth-Fragment angle at impact. Values greater than 90 indicate a likely ocean impact. The labeling system looks a bit chaotic because some letters were never used, and also because the J and M fragments have faded from view. The initially named P and Q fragments amoung others have also subsequently split into two smaller fragments each.
The idea is :no one knows what objects will impact Earth on 11th and the very partial list of objects that will hit Earth is located between:
5-12 degrees southern latitude and
42-45 degrees western longitude
That's a limited area between Equator and the southern Tropic,in the southern Atlantic ocean.
Coincidentaly, the obs in Chile (la Silla) is near the zone of impact.
All computed impacts will be in the ocean,no land impact yet.
But I'm sure there will be more fragments impacting the Earth in various locations between 11-14th ,the time period of closest approach.
There are problems shooting it down ,because of angle, speed, chaotic paths of irregular ,colliding fragments. |

Correction! At these coordinates,5-12 degrees southern latitude,42-45 degrees western longitude, the fragments will hit Brazil!Check on a school globe.
I said it will be in the southern Atlantic because that was the general opinion, did not check, sorry.
If you wanna contact the obs:
Sir
We would be only too happy to help you make more precise calculations in this matter, if you will only give us your name address and phone number.
We wont keep you waiting long.
A promise.

No panic until it will be too late anyhow. We need to get our butts in gear. I disagree... it will be in the Atlantic and on May 25th |

Go to Mapquest or Google Earth to verify. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 89434 5/5/2006 10:06 AM | | Re: The comet will hit us! | Quote | But for the comet in question, the minimal miss distance is 0.04 LD. Since that is - three sigma from the predicted nominal miss distance, doesn't that mean that there is a .3% chance that the closet comet fragment will get within 0.04 LD?
I don't get what all the excitement is about. |

Try to be more original moron |
|
Anonymous Coward User ID: 89434 5/5/2006 10:14 AM | | Re: The comet will hit us! | Quote | Well that is what the minimal miss distance is. That is, the minimal miss distance is minus three sigma of the expected miss distance. That means that there is a 99.7% probability that the actual miss distance will be greater than 0.04 AU. And remember, that is still 0.04 AU away, not an impact. If the NASA numbers are correct, then getting to 0.00 AU (true impact) is approaching zero.
From a statistical perspective, your chances are probably better for winning the powerball lotto tomorrow. |

Caligulas User ID: 75121 (OP) 5/5/2006 2:40 PM | | Re: The comet will hit us! | Quote | the Shoemaker-Levi 9 comet impacted on Jupiter, which is a gas giant, having winds of 300 mph and extreme pressures and temperatures.
For these reasons it is impossible to predict the exact time ,location and angular entry(last entry in the data file, not the latitude/longitude) on impacts on Jupiter!
(not to mention the obvious difficulties)
One last thing:why the respected director of ESO replied on that thread?
Maybe the data file is not true, the area is suspectly small and the fragments are too few,but they are more than in the case of Shoemaker-Levi 9(only 2 or 3 ,as I recall)
but something is true and will happen |

Anonymous Dude User ID: 95928 5/20/2006 10:24 PM | | Re: The comet will hit us! | Quote | No comet will hit the earth. Obviously, NASA would scrap the planned shuttle launch in favor of moving the shuttle somewhere safe, and say they scrapped the plans for other reasons, not on the mover like it is right now, making it's way to cape canaveral . |
