The Engels were active parishioners at St. Rose, as were the Hubbards. Rousseau actually attended a Congregational church, as it turns out. Jewish faith is reckoned through the mother, not the father; so even though the notion that Gilles is Jewish because he lived in "D'Israeli" or whatever is ridiculous, it wouldn't matter if he were a full rabbi. I still think the father is likely Catholic or was raised Catholic, as they are francophiles. None of this really matters--but Catholics don't bury Jewish people.
