It's against the society to send out initiation letters. You must request initiation.

Whoever told you the story is a LIAR!

No one told me, I received the letter, from the order of demolay I believe. In any evebt believe me or not it had a brochure with clinton and other masonic presidents, info about the god with a g thing anc the addy and number of a lodge a few towns over.

Letters all only sent out only to those that have pledged the rights of fellowship. The main form letters are out their and you can find some of them by Googling. There is no such letter for initiation in existance because it is against the rules. You have to receive your rights first.

I got one several years ago, was in my late fifties. It was out of the blue, I did not solicit, unless you count doing some research on secret societies and related subjects.

As for the timing, the letter hinted strongly that I was being tracked. They claimed to know my astrological profile, and were contacting me because I was approaching a time when my personal power would be at a maximum. (I found the letter creepy and unsettling, did not reply and got rid of it).

Re: why would someone get a letter to join the masons at 13 y.o
The Demolay society (named after a famous Templar head) is kind of like the Boyscouts for masons.

They take boys up to 19 or so, I think (roughly).

13 would be right in the age range for their recruiting efforts.

Why would you get such a letter? Someone had to have recommended you to them. Another member or a Mason in the community.

So, as far as I know, that sounds pretty reasonable.

You have to have another member invite you or recommend you. I was in Job's daughters as a teen. Didn't remain though. An uncle of mine, who was a banker in NJ wrote a letter of recommendation for me. I only wanted to join because a friend was a member and she wanted me in. I believe you have to be a blood relation to the person who invites you. I haven't participated since I was 15 though and am not sure if the rules are the same.
