We only had the school vacation and wanted to see the northern part but did852 miles and the greatest time. Would like to, one day, do the Monson to Katahdin stretch again. 10 - 14 days without civilization and you can see your goal on day one. the hundred miles of wilderness from Monson to Katahdin was my favorite part of the journey. The emotions of seeing the end in sight and the beautiful untouched wilderness that is Maine combined to make that part of the trip unforgettable.  Not many people get out that far out, huh? We started the trip on the third day of our summer vacation and two days after the park opened on Memorial Day weekend. Prepared by reading the the 2 volume set, 'Hiking the Appalachian Trail' but only have K-mart Kilimanjaro backpacks and normal dried store food. Didn't see a single person for 12 days until we reached Monson but moose everyday. Our very first meal (after the up and down of Katahdin) was spaghetti. Our strainer, to save weight, was a piece of nylon screen. As we poured the noodles into it, and they flopped over and into the dirt. Rinse them off and try again. Great time, learned a lot and met many cool people. Did they ever build real lean-to's in the Monson-Katahdin stretch or are they still with earth or sapling floors? nahhh not many people make it that far, :) Your crazy for starting at Katahdin .. that is by far the hardest mountain to hike on the east coast. I love the nylon idea for the noodles i need to try that!!! most of the lean-to's were redone before I hiked it so yes all the base ball bat floor ones are gone now. I didn't care for the mouse infested sleep so i slept out every night in my hammock usually staying around the shelter areas because of water. You would swim through schools of yellow-tail and lane snapper so dense and big you would feel disoriented and it would be what seemed like minutes before the entire school passed. The water was so clear you could see for what seemed like miles. Dolphins came in an check us out one time, they even swam with us for awhile. It was also the first and only time I ever saw a Great White Shark, luckily we were already almost out of air on our second dive of the day. It was absolutely gorgeous, and a perfect day... But this was not just any race. It was "The Moose Run" in Morrison Illinois, billed as "The Toughest Race In America". Bill Gussie, the promoter and owner of a great deal of the property is a complete sadist. His job is to hurt you and blow up your bike. I remember one guy actually crying in the "swamp" because he blew the motor in his brand new RM. This "swamp" it's about 100 yards long with a sharp right turn up a steep hill. Somewhere there is a picture of three riderless bikes sunk up to their cases just standing there in the mud. It's so thick they won't even fall over! ATV's have to pull 'em out. This is a race that 150-200 guys start, and maybe 15-20 will actually finish. These videos DO NOT do it justice. I'm talking about 6 hours and 100 plus miles of pure hell. This race was absoultely the single most difficult thing I've ever done.... AND I TROPHIED!!! | Anonymous Coward User ID: 28057894  Denmark08/13/2013 05:09 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Bought something not very legal in a village out in the country side of pakistan with my cousin and his ex-SSG commando friend, we went there on a motorcycle all 3 sitting on it, on the way back we see a police van coming straight for us, the commando soldier stops, turns the bike around and we first go full speed bakc into the village and exit on the other side of it into the jungle/prarie the cops were still on our tail and my adrenaline was racing, this was like pure survival mode, because if they caught us we would be tortured for days and sent to some hell hole we are riding the bike in the prarie/mountainous area and therefore we had to keep jumping off it, dragging it, jump back up and keep going, them in hot pursuit of us finally we come to a fork in the road and my cousin is like, pick a road!,we decided to turn right and came into a passage where the police couldnt keep following us, later i learned that the left side road was a dead end, so pretty lucky for us we got off scott free and with everything intact :D |
