The portable LifeStraw water filter, now available on Firebox, was made in Denmark in 2005 as a solution to the problem of unsafe drinking water in the Third World, where one child dies every 15 seconds as a result of drinking dirty water.

Thanks for posting.

I"ll check it out. There is suppose to be a lot of money coming soon, so maybe this would be a good idea to get these distributed to the countries that need them most, until a better solution is found.

Toilet water in the US is probably cleaner than drinking water in many other parts of the world.

Just used them in the Amazon, and it works well. I've gotten parasites from the rainforest water before, so these things are light weight and work well.

So let's say you bug out, the doom is upon is, and you have your straw...for how long does it last when it's been months and you and your family of 6 have been using it continuously, day in, day out...

Will it last forever?

I thought filters have a limited life.

A family of four could drink enough water to survive out of the life straw for over a year before the filter would be done. I actually just purchased one of these yesterday, and will probably pick up a few more for just in case purposes. They are too cheap not to.

there seemed to be kind of algae on the cistern walls, last time I looked in there - Haven't taste it, but wpuld be safe though I guess.

Little over mile away from here are several old artificial ponds filled with ground water. (Nowadays looking beautiful natural formations) THe near one Chocolate Factory draws it supplies from the same ground water so I think won't get thirsty very soon ...

besides my country has the best most abundant fresh water reservoirs in the world. You could drink straight from a different lake every day of your life without running out of lakes or getting sick... famous Finnish eco-fascist philosopher Pentti Linkola has proved the concept, having drunk from thousands of lakes and swamps ....

Re: Would you drink water from a TOILET? This straw lets you do just that (and it's also saving millions of lives)
LifeStraw is cool, but for a few bucks more get a Sawyer filter, which has a million gallon guarantee:
[link to www.amazon.com]

* One million gallons vs LifeStraw's 264 gallons
* About the same weight (3oz) as a LifeStraw (2oz)
* 0.1 microns vs LifeStraw's 0.2 microns (gets more nasties) and for a few bucks more you can get a version that's 0.02 microns. Gets viruses. (Frequent in third world countries, or America in thirty years.)

Two cons are that you cannot let the Sawyer freeze if there's water inside (take it into your sleeping bag), and the bag is somewhat fragile. Solutions for these are regularly discussed at BackpackingLight.com.

P.S. I don't work for Sawyer. Just sharing a good product.

I have a lifestraw in my jeep. Use it for a backup when offloading. I don't think I'll test it out in the tolet. If u go out into the bush now & then it's a good system. They are about $20 online.

I have a few of these and I have used them... they work fine.

They are supposed to stop working once the 1000 liters has been sucked through, so you won't suck any bad water.
They have a 5 year shelf life too.

My company offers the Lifestraw. I am very familiar with them.

We ship hundreds of these out a week to folks going into places like Haiti and African countries. These straws were originally developed for third world water conditions and remove any bacteria or parasites that are harmful to us.

They do not filter chlorine or fluoride, that is not what they are designed to do. You can take these fishing and drink right out of the lake under your boat if you want.

Take them with you when you travel to places where the water is questionable.

I have done the demos for these straws at self-reliance expos for my company. I go to extremes to show the straw does its job. I scoop up dirt right off the ground outside the building and drop it in a big glass of water for the attendees to see. Yum...... hehehe. That is a bit much, but it gets the point across.

Yes, the Berkeys are good too. I have the Lite and use it every day. These are good for filtering water for cooking too, which the Lifestraw cannot do.
