WinCo: worker-owned grocery chain that pays benefits, pensions, living wages -- and has lower prices than WalMart
WinCo is a midwestern chain of worker-owned stores that consistently underprice WalMart, while still paying a living wage to their staff and decent prices to their suppliers. Their secret appears to be a smaller selection of goods, sourced directly from factories -- but surely the fact that they're not extracting billions in profits for a family of rapacious plutocrats also helps keep prices low.

This is a winning business model. Workers are owners and are excited to go to work.

Yes, that is so true. It is the way forward, and Big Business will suffer in the long run. The going direct to the supplier is a win win for them, and the supplier. This business Model, if followed by other new business, would turn any country around.

I couldn't agree more. This type of business model has the ability to create so much additional jobs in their operating countries, that it would, in a very short time, allow itself to develop into a open trade zone within local communities. The middle man would be gone in no time.

WINCO is great, with great prices that beat WM, and the store atmosphere is also great with excellent lighting, not the creepy feel of WM. The employees also seem to enjoy their jobs and are helpful. You don't get the feeling that you're talking to a slave because you're not. The employees are obviously treated well.

We have Aldi in the Midwest. Similar model where customers bag their own groceries. The groceries are super cheap, decent quality. Pay a quarter to use a shopping cart, return the cart and get your quarter back. I saw a posting a few months ago, starting wages were $ 13 an hour - which is a lot here in the Chicago suburbs for a cashier position.

Winco is my store too. We used to go to their first store back when it was called Warehouse Market...if I remember it right. Boise, Idaho.

It is clean, and they have the best produce. The prices are great too. Winco is tops.

They have a bulk product selection that is better than any other I have seen. They order anything for you and even give a case discount on what you order.

LOL. Yeah, except the produce ain't the greatest. I know. I used to run LA to Woodburn OR with a load every now and then. I always crossed my fingers that I wouldn't get any rejected produce. I'd say every one out of three loads, I'd have to head over to the east side of Portland and go to this place that takes anything, so I could empty my truck.

You get what you pay for, my friends. Remember that.
