roaring noise over san diego
August 13th 2013. For the last two years we hear a roaring noise
in the San Diego area. It sounds like a large jet blast being turned on and off like a light switch. It's not a plane overhead due to cloudy weather. Some where there are tests going on and there is no answer from anyone! This noise may be coming from some unknown area and echoing through the atmosphere from hundreds of miles away. If it was in the San Diego area the news stations would be aware of it, however, requests for help from local news stations haas been ignored! Does anyone have additional information on this persistent roar!

I used to hear that near where i lived. Always. I think we have holes in our ozone and magnetic field that allows radiation and possibly solar winds to come through, that may the sound you are hearing. Sounds like a jet, but the sound never dissipates and can last for hours.

No, Fowler, CA, out in the middle of grape orchards, no where near an airport.

Dave,

I'm sorry, but you are going to have to do better than that.

How about making some audio & video recordings?

Post them on SoundCloud and the post the links here.

I've been working with audio for over 35 years and I might be able to help identify this sound you hear.

Also, please provide a Google Map location of where you are. You don't have to put your home on it, just pick something nearby so that myself and others can take a look at the airports, airbases and other manufacturing centers in the area.

Maybe we can help.

It's up to you. Until then, I call bullshit.

Nothing personal.

Re: roaring noise over san diego
I hear it in the UK, right now, noticed it after two occurrences of a super super loud plane noise flying over that lasted much longer than normal and obviously much louder.

The roar is just on the fringes of audibility then it will flare up to different degrees in volume. I have been recording since the 2nd loud roar, to hopefully capture a 3rd.

I will post some sound clips once I have sorted through the audio recordings. The OP is not making this up!

Trying to figure out exactly what it is and give it a "normal" explanation?!? Struggling to find even a crackpot answer atm.

Early thoughts a type of craft that moves so quickly it takes forever for the sound to catch up with it and that's why we can still hear it. I dunno it's just plain odd.

They used to do it at Teledyne Ryan, not sure where now. I couldn't find a specific San Diego afterburner test, but I have heard them for decades.

Re: roaring noise over san diego
The roar is from military jets at N. Island and/or Miramar. It has become much more prominent in the last couple of years. We live near SDSU, and sometimes the windows rattle. The dog is very afraid, as it sounds like thunder.

The on-off mode is jet testing. I believe some of this may come from Kearney Mesa or down by Lindberg Field. If you're near Ocean Beach and Point Loma, some of the N. Island takeoffs sound like the world is about to end! Not sure how the rich folks on the Point can put up with this.

There appears to be a lot of denial by the military, coupled with the "That's the sound of freedom," cliche that pretty much allows them to do anything they want in San Diego!

Re: roaring noise over san diego
they used to do this at RAF St Athan in South Wales too. very VERY loud, heard over 10 miles away.

'engine testing', or doing something to the geology of the planet, aka the 'earthquake machine'?

there was old footage of I think it was Russia but it may have been the usa testing an earthquake machine. can't find it now

it was basically a huge jet blasting down into the earth below if memory serves correctly

is THAT what they're doing?

what are air bases doing testing aircraft engines ANYWAY?

don't air bases just house the finished machines and launch them and let them land?

Re: roaring noise over san diego
Your observations about the noise are enough to identify the source. Besides the military aircraft, I think Teledyne or one of the local aerospace firms may be partially responsible. The problem is twofold:

1. Some people don't even hear it. It is low-frequency, and not everyone hears it. Our brains tend to tune out noise, so we don't go crazy. They may have a constant din of traffic, TV-audio, construction, and just enough ambient noise that the roar doesn't stand out, and they don't complain.

I have verified this with neighbors--some say "What jets?" and others hear it and mention how annoying it is, especially since we live over 8 miles from the nearest military base and Lindberg Field.

2. You can call the bases or company and "report" the noise, but nothing will be done.
I.E. Too bad the car alarms go off! We're sorry your pup chewed the door.

I've heard the exact same thing down in Cornwall, quite a few times too. Normally late at night when the traffic noises have calmed down. Tried recording it but couldn't pick it up well enough :/
