Was I lied to about the moon?
I remember being told in school that the cycles of the moon are caused by the sun being blocked by the earth and this creates a shadow.

Yesterday around 6 PM im on my way to a friends house and i look up, I see the moon is a half crecent, the sun is also fully visible.

There was clearly a direct line of site from the moon to the sun without any obstruction.

Why is the moon still a half crecent and not full?

Have I been lied to?

Did you sleep through the totality of your so-called education? The moons different stages (half, quartered, cresent) are not created by the earth's shadow on the moon. It is caused by the location of the moon towards the sun. That is also why you can see the moon and the sun in the same sky at the same time.

If the moon was perfectly in line with both the sun and the earth at the same time, we would be seeing solar and lunar eclipes every month. The fact that we don't shows proof that the moon is NOT in perfect alinement.

Try this. Go to a dark room and set a flashlight on a table, pointing towards you. Hold a ball out at arm's length, and look at the light shining on it from the flashlight. As you slowly turn in a circle, the view of the ball will show the very same views as if looking at the moon. The different views you see is not shadows cast upon the ball(moon), but the direction of light being cast on the ball(moon).

The way the sun was positioned caused me think that more of the moon would have been lit up.

the moon takes 28 days to orbit the Earth so it will be in a different position every day/night so we view it from different angles.
