Your second picture showed the correct "shape"/stage of the moon (half moon - am blanking on names right now).

And the moon was in the SW in the sky (at least it was a few hours ago here in North Carolina.

Perhaps there is something in the atmosphere in your neck of the woods causing the moon to look reddish? Any wild fires in your region?

Otherwise - I don't know.

It looks red because of smoke from wildfires in the area. That photo was from August 14th, but it's the same story tonight. At the time OP says he took his photo, at 5:22 UT, the moon should have been about 20 degrees above the horizon in the southwest, at 218.22 degrees azimuth with an apparent orientation of 25.64 degrees from vertical with the illuminated limb facing down towards the horizon as seen from the middle of Utah (39.5 N 111.5 W).

hmmm so im an idiot for specifically stating that it might be the moon and i wasnt sure? nor did i call it doom or nibiru or some stupid crap like that? im not a moon guy nor do i pay much attention to it. I just so happened to notice this when i got home and posted some pics.

Yeah, has to be some kind of pollution or smoke from a wildfire, because the moon here in Cali is white, and bright, little over half moon.

Has to be the angle of it for you OP. Im in Illinois and just went outside about 10 minutes ago the moon was as it should be very big and bright the clouds around it made it look like and eye though that kindof freaked me out lol
