American children are taught the account of history, but rarely taught the facts of the culture or the societal system in which that history came to pass. Amazingly, most people today read history and perceive the events of it from their modern societal view; knowing nothing of the restraints or conscience of the society in which the events took place. This is a terrible fault of educators bent on quantity of knowledge and not quality of knowledge, unfortunately. We have been educated right out of any understanding beyond the view from our keepers' windows. It makes solving any problem these days damned near impossible!

That was World War II. The US was officially neutral during WWII until 1941, and Brown Brothers Harriman was one of any number of firms who were doing business legally in Germany prior to our involvement in the war.

Prescott Bush didn't own BBH, he was a partner, and there is little evidence that he had much influence in the daily operation of BBH. Also, BBH didn't support the Nazis, they did business with Fritz Thyssen, who eventually fell out with Hitler and fled Germany in 1941, only to be arrested by the Nazis and detained in France.
