Brussel Sprout User ID: 45364307 Belgium 08/19/2013 05:22 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I volunteer in a retirement home when I have time. I used to also volunteer for the red cross. Quoting: Brussel Sprout That's always a goodo ne. My town is pretty small....I don't think we even have a retirement home..I think you would have to go to chico for the nearest one... Which isn't far, about 20 miles. But I am looking for something that can be done in my little town. Good suggestion none the less though. How about helping old folks carry their groceries home? Or open up a place (even at your own home) to get elderly people together who live isolated lives and they can sit around and knit sweaters for homeless people for during the winter! |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 4991783 Support old people who have lived in the community for say 5 years or more, to help them with utility bills and even food. Generally they will have paid off their houses already but may need financial help to stay in them. I live in a very conservative town and this is what we do. I think Obama hates our guts. :) That's a good one. How exactly do you guys do this? We call it "neighbor helping neighbor", many people volunteer time, some probably also donate money. There seem to be groups with that name in various towns. I like that it keeps the charity local, for the people you've chosen to live among. And we all get old so unlike charities that are for people different than you that you would never get, this is something you might need yourself someday. |

Thanks! This is a fantastic idea! I saw this on the show "Jericho" when TSHTF. The townspeople would bring items that they had and would exchange for things that they needed. This will be exactly how it will go down when things get really really bad. |

Brussel Sprout User ID: 45364307 Belgium 08/19/2013 06:00 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | This is something everyone can do. The "postponed coffee". When you go and buy a coffee at a diner or resto, pay for two coffees but only take one, so when a homeless person comes in he won't have to pay for his. I heard about some places doing this. You can ask about it in your local bistros. I love this idea, everyone can use a coffee now and then. Even homeless people. |

That way, they don't breed but can help keep down the rats while living their life. Since you live in a smaller community, perhaps this can be tweaked into helping your low-income neighbors with rides to the nearest city that offers low-cost spaying and neutering. You can even cover the cost of the operation for those who could use the help. That way, they can keep their four-legged friend without worry about marking with urine or their pet escaping to find a mate or dealing with a litter. You mentioned that their are plenty of Mexicans where you live. Perhaps purchase some educational materials in Spanish teaching the importance of controlling pet overpopulation. |

My dad died from Hotchkins Lympohoma and leukemia towards the end. Tried to ask for help and they denied him because he had the wrong type of cancer.. although a church which we belonged to none paid our electric bill for atleast a year and continued to for a few months after he passed Now that is a true act of kindness no clue what church it was not sure the denomination but being a church I would assume some kind of Christianity but if I could find out who it was I would love to thank them. Maybe think of being an anonymous doner to cancer victims. Oh and also my dad continued to give money to a leukemia striken child even after the charity refused to help him he said that the child deserved it more.... and this man was an asshole so that pulled on my heart strings |

That about 10 cents of every dollar actually goes to research and helping the family. Although cancer treatment centers don't charge their patients, they operate only on donations. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 29615201 New Zealand 08/19/2013 06:22 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | [link to www.mainlymusic.org.au] Start a Mainly Music. Great for the local pre-schoolers and young mothers, and a lot of fun. I helped start one a number of years back, at that time start up cost was about $300. They give you all sorts of training videos and advice as to how to get one started. I know one group ran with just two volunteers, others use many more volunteers. It has a very low-key, non-denominational Christian background - and most here in New Zealand are held in local churches, which usually are happy to donate the space for free to hold the meetings. But you could run it nearly any way you want I'm thinking. I think there are now chapters in the U.S., Australia and New Zealand - maybe more, I don't really know anymore. Check out their websites. |
