Either way I would not trust anything TEPCO says. It is in Japanese culture to LIE until you are blue in the face, to avoid uncomfortable situations. People will do this until it results in death day after day. That is why there are so many suicides in Japan. Japanese people do not like to face the truth, it messes up their "Wa" or their "peacefulness" and would rather lie and be lied to. This is the real truth of Japan.

By the way this is not my country, I Just live here... I'm very resentful to Japan for this aspect of their culture. This is neither the time nor the place for that bullshit. They need to get serious.

You can bet that whatever they say, whatever they admit to, is already basically common knowledge among those who really pay attention to what's going on. When they are admitting it, it means something worse is going on.

The Japanese psychology in this is fascinating.

The authorities haven't had a clue what to do since day one. However they seem to believe that if they remain calm, civil and respectful that this event will sort itself out. It's like they are waiting for one of their deities to rescue them, and it will as long as they remain patient, calm and civil etc. so they will to worthy of some divine intervention.

Shit, it 's like their mindset is still in the middle ages.

It's fascinating and a tragedy for us all it would seem.

Fukushima bay radiation levels highest since measurements began

Reports from Tokyo Electric Power Co. (TEPCO), operator of the disaster-stricken Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, say that measurements of radioactive tritium in seawater – seeping out of the nuclear complex via groundwater into the sea – show levels at 4700 becquerels per liter, the highest tritium level in the measurement history. The highest tritium levels have come in the past 15 days, the same reports show.

what's worse is like.. I can understand my friends from back home not knowing about what's going on really, since they aren't here. I don't know how much American media covers this anymore, but I doubt it's much. Most of them have long forgotten the earthquake/tsunami/meltdown (while I'm still suffering PTSD LOL) .. But many Japanese people go out of their way to ignore the radiation. THey don't even want to talk about it. If you mention it to a Japanese person, 9 times out of 10, they will say "Yeah It's scary huh... Nothing you can do though."

They're not saying too much new right now. A leak from a tap... does not 300 tons make.

its kinda late for me to do math, but 300 tons is like 600,000 lbs right? 62.4 pounds per cubic foot = 9615 ft3 which is basically a 10x10x10 ft cube. A good sized swimming pool.

We would like to partly correct the information announced regarding the water leak from a drain valve of a tank dike in the H4 area in Fukushima Daiichi NPS.

We previously announced that a TEPCO employee on patrol found water leaking from a drain valve of a tank dike in the H4 area in Fukushima Daiichi NPS at around 10:40 AM on August 19. However, the correct time when water was found leaking is around 9:50 AM on August 19.

Further, we announced that a puddle of approx. 3mx3mx1cm was found outside of the drain valve of the dike. Other than this puddle, there was another puddle of approx. 50cmx6mx1cm found outside of the dike.

TEPCO officials say an inspection showed a drop in the water level inside one of the 26 tanks. They estimate that the tank has lost about 300 out of the roughly 1,000 tons of water it held.
Officials say water inside the tanks has been treated to reduce radioactive cesium. But a test of the leaked water found it contained up to 80-million becquerels per liter of beta-ray emitting substances, including strontium.

The utility plans to remove soil near the tank. It will also measure radiation levels in the area to determine the scale of the latest water leakage at the troubled nuclear plant.

Use metric. It's easier.

For water;

1 kg is 1 litre

1 tonne is 1000 litres is 1 cubic metre

300 tonnes is 300 cubic metres

It's metric tons. Is that 2,200 pounds? If it is, add 10%.

Fukushima has been leaking 300 tons since around day one. This makes me wonder if the mention of the 300 tons is referring to that leakage, plus this other leak where a valve was left open. Just thinking out loud.

An Olympic sized pool is 50 meters long, not 100 feet. Not sure how deep it is.

The size isn't really important. It's how much radioactivity that gets leaked.

Nuclear isotopes don't get used up when they cause damage. In contrast, a chemical reaction is a one-and-done reaction. Isoptopes continue to cause trouble until they burn out. which could be years or thousands of years.

So far TEPCO have not even been able to deal with the water issues associated with the main problem. The main problem being three melted down reactor cores. It is time for the Japanese people to wake up and realize that the main problem is not going to go away, cannot be dealt with through conventional engineering and thinking, and will most certainly kill them all as it spreads throughout the aquifer system. Wa be damned!

LATEST:

An estimated 300 tonnes of water is believed to have leaked out from a huge radioactive water storage tank at the site. The leak is believed to be continuing today, TEPCO and the Nuclear Regulation Authority said.

The radiation level, measured around 50 centimeters above the toxic water surface, was about 100 millisieverts per hour, Tokyo Electric Power (TEPCO) said.
Scientists consider that level of radiation as harmful to human health, AFP reports.

TEPCO denied that toxic water had flowed into the adjacent Pacific ocean, but the regulator ordered the utility to study the possibility that it had escaped through nearby drains.

The agency released a preliminary assessment that the situation amounted to a level one incident on an eight-point international scale from zero to seven – seven being the most serious reading.

“We have instructed TEPCO to find the source of contaminated water – from which tank the water is leaking – and to seal the leakage point,'' a regulatory official told AFP. “We have also instructed them to retrieve contaminated soil to avoid a further expansion of toxic water, and to strengthen monitoring of the surrounding environment.''

Drain valves on the water tank may have been left open, allowing the water to flow out, TEPCO said.
“At 7:00 pm [local time on Monday] we started retrieving the escaped water,'' the company said.
An employee at the utility found water leaking from a valve at about 9:50 am local time Monday, it added.
