what Id like to know is,were the blacks already slaves BEFORE they were sent to US,because slave master buying slaves isnt too bad,and then yes they should be kissing americas feet,but if they were free,then captured and sold off AS slaves,than I could agree theyve something still to be thankful for,couldnt be worse than the scum that captured them

The image that we have today of slavery has been distorted. We have an image of slaves being watched over as they worked themselves to death and at one sign of fatigue or laziness they were whipped. This just isn't true.In reality those who dealt overly harshly with slaves became parriahs in their communities and were seen as unchristian and cruel.

The reality of being a slave in the US meant waking up in a small house with your wife and children. Eating breakfast, getting ready, and going to work. They were usually hardly supervised at all so long as they did their job. At the end of the day they went home to their families. When it wasn't crop season slaves had more time to themselves. They were provided a house, food, clothing, a stove, and all that is needed to live. Additionally, most were allowed enough land for their own use that they could raise hogs and chickens of their own. Because of this many slaves were able to earn a little money and so could purchase a few niceties. Like everyone else slaves had Sundays off.

Sure, it is still slavery. However, the image we have is that of angry white men beating every black slave to work themselves to death. It just isn't so and most slaves never were whipped.
