ONE EXCELLENT REASON NOT TO JOIN THE MILITARY: YOU MAY BE ORDERED TO KILL CIVILIANS by Paul Rockwell
"Refusing to enlist is more than a career decision. It is a moral and political act, a contribution to the burgeoning, international movement for a better, more peaceful world. It is an affirmation of the sacredness of life and the dignity of all humanity."

One Excellent Reason Not to Join the Military: You May be Ordered to Kill Civilians

by Paul Rockwell

The following article is adapted from: “Ten Excellent Reasons Not to Join the Military,” edited by Elizabeth Weill-Greenberg, with an introduction by Cindy Sheehan, published by New Press.

“A soldier who sees the humanity of the enemy makes a troubled and ineffective killer.” -- Chris Hedges

When Marine Sergeant Jimmy Massey enlisted in the Marines, he never expected that he would be ordered to kill civilians. He enlisted in good faith, and he trusted his Commander-in-Chief to tell the truth, to follow the Geneva Conventions and the rule of law. He was even ready to risk his life for his country in the event that the United States faced a real or imminent attack.

In January 2003, Jimmy was deployed to Iraq. During the initial invasion he was involved in a number of “checkpoint killings,” the kind of atrocities that occur over and over today without fanfare or scandal.

A hard-core Marine, Jimmy was in charge of a platoon of machine gunners and missile men. It was their job to secure the road out of Baghdad. As bombs rained down on the ancient city of five million people, civilians fled in panic. There was chaos at the checkpoints.

“All Iraqis,” Jimmy told me in a recent interview, “were considered a menace.”

Left Wing anti-america anti-military Lies.

Im in the military, granted I have never been to iraq nor have I been in that long but my superiors would never order me to kill civilians. It goes against everything we stand for and are willing to die for.

Well, Private, since you can dismiss the above article so readily, perhaps you're in need of a reality check.

Here's an article from last fall that might be a good 'slap in the face' wake-up for you...

"The American military, from top to bottom is a hideous blight on our planet. There are no innocents in this massive killing machine. There´s no ´honour´ in volunteering for the worlds largest terrorist organization, now under the command of the deceitful, criminal cabal led by George W. Bush. American soldiers are well trained to kill, and obviously, to torture, and they go off to Iraq all of their own ´free will." They know that they will kill, and that they may die. There will not be any "honour," or "glory" for these stupid youngsters who continue to volunteer themselves for ´duty´ in Bush´s appalling adventure. These soldiers, including the 2000 dead, by taint of their volunteer status, are each PERSONALLY responsible for the murder of 100,000 innocent Iraqi´s." - Stop the Troops! There´s No Glory or Honor in Iraq By Ingmar Lee [link to www.counterpunch.org]

And (since I'm logging off and know where this will likely head) may I again state, NO I don't support our troops. At best, I empathize with the naive ones, like our friend, Private, here...

I have been in the army(not marines, there is a BIG diffrence) for 3 months and what the article is saying just does not make any sense. Im an Infantry Reservist, I hold confidential security clearence(and no theres no damn comet coming in may like alot of you think nor is there some grand plan to declare martial law, atleast at my clearence level). An average day at the regiment(parading, not on excercise or operation) really just consists of showing up, falling in on parade square, getting yelled at for our uniforms not being perfect by some seargent and then sent off to the "lower gym". Its a waiting area while the training is being setup. Sometimes its how to operate a claymore mine, other times its section attack training, sometimes drill or radiowork etc. If your going on tour or operation or on course, it is prepetory work then like on weapons training, signals, etc.
After being dismissed usually half the regiment then heads up to the bar discussing how much bs they just went through.

Were all buddies there and a not snobby bunch who talks friendly to anyone who wants to talk to us. At the sametime, if any of us would even try to get on say a bus in our uniform, half the people start looking at us all weird and staring. We joined up to defend the country and protect freedom. We joined to end tyranny by dictators and to end the suffering of countless peoples who have to live in societys were they are oppressed and have no free will. We fight to bring these people freedom and to end there suffering. Killing civilians is the opposite of our mission objectives and is against why we fight. In reality, it is everything we fight against.

We fight to bring these people freedom and to end there suffering.

You are clueless.

Killing civilians is the opposite of our mission objectives and is against why we fight.

Hope you will never have to see the truth.

You are just dead meat used from a criminal government in charge, and if you need more proof after years of killing and war you are just the type of person they in fact need to complish their crimes.

Well one honest article and very few replies..

The real criminals are the ones who give power to the government, the men in business suits.

And it's very right what the article says about the soul:

"a way of life that claims and smothers souls".

But it's not just the military which does it, it's business which smothers souls, and the Church which teaches people to accept and obey an external god rather than obeying their own consciences.

Re: ONE EXCELLENT REASON NOT TO JOIN THE MILITARY: YOU MAY BE ORDERED TO KILL CIVILIANS by Paul Rockwell
Private, no one doubts your good intentions. Indeed, that is precisely the most frightening point that these veterans are trying to make: the tragedy of *good* young men being turned into killing machines.

If you read carefully all of the examples given in the original post, you will notice that these are indeed orders that an officer might give. The officer will simply order you to assume that the aggressor (the insurgent who shot at you) is somewhere in the crowd (or in one of the cars coming to the checkpoint, etc.). The officer will tell you that the top priority is to kill the aggressor, and that any innocent civilians killed are merely unintended collateral damage.

This doesn't sound so bad in theory. What makes it so horrifying in practice is that in this case, the United States is an occupying army that deliberately attacked a peaceful nation on the basis of known lies. In other words, if Iraq had really been a Nazi Germany that had brutally attacked our allies and mass-murdered our allies' civilians, we might have some justification in taking a rather harsh approach to this occupation. But the truth is that Iraq had done nothing to us or our allies in over ten years. We actually claimed that we were *liberating* Iraq. How can we possibly justify such a brutal, mindless occupation of peaceful people who only want to be left alone?

Re: ONE EXCELLENT REASON NOT TO JOIN THE MILITARY: YOU MAY BE ORDERED TO KILL CIVILIANS by Paul Rockwell
I wonder if Private would shoot up a 'suspected terrorist/insurgent hideout' without first checking to make sure it was an actual terrorist/insurgent hideout. I wonder if Private would kill a civilian simply because that civilian might be a terrorist or insurgent. Or perhaps kill a group of people in which a single person was a known terrorist/insurgent?

The methodology is suspect, Private. It's the "Kill them all, let God sort them out" mindset which so directly leads to the loss of innocent life. Burn the village to save it? Oh, wait, that was another time and place...

If God only helps those who help themselves, then it is certainly reasonable for us to only help those who want our help. If the vast majority of Iraqis do not want out help, and consider our methods too brutal and destructive, then should we be there?
