Amerika has gone down a very dark path of which the end game isn't exactly clear but it seems dark. First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win. ~ Mahatma Gandhi "Always, at every moment, there will be the thrill of victory, the sensation of trampling on an enemy who is helpless. If you want a picture of the future, imagine a boot stamping on a human face—forever." ~ George Orwell "The exact level of tyranny that you're going to live under, is the level of tyranny you put up with." ~Thomas Jefferson "All tyranny needs to gain a foothold is for people of good conscience to remain silent. ~ Thomas Jefferson |

There are plenty of flavors to appeal to almost everyone. For those a little scared of it...I reccommend Linux Mint KDE. Feels a lot like windows, is extremely elegant and incredibly stable.. And for those that say...I need to run software that only runs on windows...I have yet been unable to get a program to run under Linux. Please PLEASE people! Shed your misconceptions! Try Linux! |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 26745463 Canada 08/22/2013 12:17 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Russia will adopt a derivative of Linux as its official OS in a couple of years (2015 I believe). That should tell you something. Same people who brought you one of the most eficient platforms in public use - nginx, the platform GLP uses. That should give you an idea... Quoting: Anonymous Coward 26745463 To clarify, a Russian programmer developed nginx. This goes back to the days when post Perestroika collapse Russia was barely entering the computer age. Russians, working on older, substandard systems, many of them purchased second hand, were having trouble keeping up with the rest of the world in the sphere of web hosting. Enter nginx - an amazingly compact, super eficient server-side OS enhancement to UNIX, the engine running a healthy percentage of the world's web hosting servers. The rest is history... |

Do you have UEFI BIOS? If so you have to make some changes sometimes. You can find tutorials or just mess with stuff until it works. Also, anytime you burn an ISO you should verify the checksums. If they don't match then some data was corrupted, either by accident or you're getting a compromised image. Last Edited by Unixlike on 08/22/2013 12:28 PM |

Yes if you have a new laptop....you need disable UEFI in the bios. That was microscrews attempt to create a locked boot loader to prevent people from installing linux. In addition...many new computers housing a Windows 7/8 installation also have one or two extra partitions dedicated to manufacturer Restore files. That or those would have to be backed up and deleted in order to be able to multi-boot the system into multiple installed OSs. Plenty of forum/blog posts on this and you tube videos. Look for info pertaining to your specific model, as it can get tricky. |
Unixlike User ID: 45353097 United States 08/22/2013 12:22 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Linux is vulnerable to corrupted code from source just like any other OS. However, it will not go unnoticed. All the code gets gone over again and again by thousands of developers who have to modify their own packages to suit any changes made. People will know very quickly if malicious code gets inserted. Also, Linux is more secure by it's very nature and that will never change. It's just what Linux is. Too many custom kernels being compiled, too many OS variants, too much diversity, too much user competence, and too many IT libertarians involved in the project. I don't know how Linux could ever be compromised without a solution spreading through the community like wild fire. |
