When you look at the sheer volume of the Pacific Ocean and the distance and square mileage of space surrou do g Fukushima which is just a minuscule pin prick on the world map, I don't believe it can REALLY be that bad.

Don't get me wrong, I know it's horrible and bad but can it really be THAT bad? I mean there's a farmer living right up the road from the Fukushima plant who is still perfectly healthy. If the radiation is as bad as some of you say that guy should be long dead by now. Don't give me the excuse of long term accumulation either. If its really that bad then that farmer would be dead by now. Dead.

Humans absorbed Chernobyl with little difficulty. Sure a few thousand died or whatever. But it didn't kill the planet. I know Fukushima is much worse. But still, is something the size of a swimming pool going to kill everything on the planet?

I highly doubt it.

I get your sentiment, and it does seem like this fear mongering is over the top. HOWEVER, Chernobyl did not sit above groundwater. The disaster that could happen would be if these fuel rods melted down into the ground (sounds like this actually has happened) and hit the groundwater beneath. Then you're left with a geyser of radioactive steam that would pollute the world within a couple of years, and likely would result in the death of millions, or even billions. Right now, nobody knows for sure how bad it is going to get.
