Yosemite fire swallowing everything in its path

The posts I was replying to were not about water.

I'm aware SF is on Hetch-hetchy. I thought LA just takes from the delta (and anywhere else they can scrounge it up). SF will just have to let some greeney dry up. Maybe water rationing. They do have that body of water off 280--- I think it's called Crystal Lake. It feeds SF too.

I'm not overly concerned about the water. They are big on conservation, right? So let them conserve ...

Crews make progress against Yosemite-area fire

TUOLUMNE CITY, Calif. (AP) -- Officials say fire crews made progress overnight against a large wildfire threatening San Francisco's water supply, several towns near Yosemite National Park and historic giant sequoias.

Stanislaus National Forest spokesman Jerry Snyder said containment of the Rim Fire was at 15 percent on Monday morning, up from 7 percent the previous night.

The fire did continue to grow, however, and is now 234 square miles in size.

Snyder said crews are being helped by the fire's movement into less forested areas and cooler temperatures caused at least in part by the shadow cast by the large plume of smoke from the blaze.

About 4,500 structures and Hetch Hetchy Reservoir, the source of San Francisco's famously pure drinking water, remain under threat.

It is a big deal because it's a crown fire. It's a symptom of too few ground fires. This is bad because it can devastate the forest, though forests will take care of themselves if left alone. It will go out eventually, regardless of what people do, but it will do more damage if we don't limit it soon.

Yosemite wildfire grows, threatens reservoir, power station

Yosemite National Park, California (CNN) -- The numbers are staggering and the prospects are scary as a massive California wildfire menaces Yosemite National Park and San Francisco's water supply.

The tourist hotspot Yosemite Valley and its iconic attractions, including the El Capitan rock formation, currently are safe, miles from the Rim Fire's reach. However, the blaze continues to spread toward the Hetch Hetchy Reservoir, which serves 2.6 million customers in the Bay Area.

Water quality remains unchanged, despite ash that has fallen on the 459-square-mile reservoir, because the water is drawn from a depth of 260 feet, according to the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission.

The city was already transferring 275 million gallons of water daily from Hetch Hetchy to other reservoirs because Hetch Hetchy is full, but as a precautionary measure, the city increased that amount by 27 million gallons, a Tuesday statement said.

The commission said it was confident the Rim Fire would not affect the reservoir: "Due to the rocky, granite terrain and limited brush along the perimeter of the reservoir, there is little risk for direct water quality impacts."
