I'm 32 and this was still written in our highschool student handbook in the 90's. Better just to duck down put your head between your legs and kiss your arse goodbye.

Earthquake drills were fun. Everybody duck under your desk. Wtf??? How is that safe when you end up trapped under debris. That or stand in a doorway. I think now they tell you if at at all possible to get out of the building quickly and calmly.

According to Wikipedia its still a good thing to do.

Proponents of duck and cover argue that thousands could be saved through following the advice's precautions, without which, for example, people would instead run to windows to find the source of the bright nuclear weapon flash. During which time the slower moving blast wave would soon arrive causing a window glass implosion, shredding onlookers.

It is funny but I was never in a class that did that drill, no duck and cover.

If you had to g around picking up thousands of cooked bodies, wouldn't you rather they had wrapped themselves in a sheet for you?

Duck and cover was adopted back in the age of atomic weapons, before thermonuclear devices were developed.
