Sure, it's the Broken Window fallacy, but the people in charge don't consider it a fallacy. They tell stories of some German tourist coming in to town, handing over a deposit to a Greek innkeeper, who uses it to magically pay off the whole town's debt before the German realizes his money was gone. It's all bullshit, but that's the game they play. War isn't good for anybody, but the ones running the show say it is, and they usually get their way. It will give them an excuse to print more paper money and kick the can a little further down the road, and that's all they care about, because nobody cares about debt limits when there's a world war going on.

If the terrorists win the first thing they'll do is kill and exile the FSA and their families. They'll have a heck of a time bringing Democracy to Syria scattered among refugee camps or from the bottom of mass graves. The FSA will be better off if Assad wins, if only marginally.

Well, what I think is that there's exactly no chance that we'd bring our people home because there's too much else they need to do. If you think we could survive as an isolated island you're mistaken.

That does NOT mean we should go to war if there isn't reasonable belief that our Constitution is under threat. What it DOES mean is that you can put the Constitution under threat from abroad by letting situations get past the point where they can be controlled by anything less than war on our own shores, which is clearly undesirable.

And, nobody is talking about being the global police here. I personally was not in favor of intervening in Syria even before the terrorists were in charge of the opposition, and tend to agree with your position at least on the subject of Syria.

However, I do have some sympathy for the concept that the US represents an ideal that shouldn't tolerate the slaughter of innocents. I am also mindful that we probably have more people abroad protecting various species of animals, endangered and otherwise, than it would take to fire a few cruise missiles on Syria.

That's why, to me, this isn't as open and shut as you make it out to be.

However, I agree that Americans feel war-weary, and have reason to feel that way. I also understand the betrayal that people feel about voting for Obama, who pretended to be antiwar just to get elected, then doubled down on the warmongering.
