OP, there is always significance to which eye is being covered or highlighted. I'm not sure on all the specifics, but generally the left eye highlighted/right eye covered is associated with rebeliousness/anti-authority, and the opposite of right eye highlighted/left eye covered is associated with conformity/an agent of authority.

This can be seen being displayed in any number of movies, if you look for characters with eyepatches and which alignment they lean toward.
