Let me know when they can re-create a consciousness. The brain is nothing without it.

You don't think a fully functioning, though disembodied, human brain might develop self-awareness?

I think it is likely that it would.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 38706893

I'm not so sure. What came first, the chicken or the egg? Similar question, what came first, matter or consciousness?

Without consciousness to perceive the matter, would it exist at all? How does a brain magically become self aware?
The truth can't be told, it has to be realized.

will they be squishy?

should we name them?

Well, and also the possibility of strong AI - a sentient machine with superhuman powers. Now, would said machine be well-disposed towards humanity or would it look upon us as insignificant and disposable, like ants.

The first few concepts of eugenics didn't work. Pretty soon we'll be able to grow our own kids in a vat, never lose those pre-baby bodies, and be assured the human race is pure. Win win win, mirite?

I think newborn babies are not self-aware, so the hardware (the brain) comes first, and consciousness arises out of the brain.

I think the brain is like a receiver of consciousness from somewhere else. However, it needs to be structurally intact for the message to get through. kind of like a television set. If you have a properly functioning television, it will decode the signal and you will get a picture.

Similarly, once you have a structurally intact and "normal" brain, I would expect consciousness would arise from it.

If this is the kind of stuff they do publically, it makes you wonder what kinda stuff their doing behind the scenes...
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 14093935

The Brain...sure. Human (Scientists) can play with it...but they will never be able to mess with the consciousness of Humanity, or rather the...Spirituality of Humanity...because that is something that can NOT be re-written.

I have also read its a good 40 some days before a newborn is "conscious". Consciousness i do believe does come from somewhere outside of the brain as well.

Maybe if they could create an exact human brain in a lab it would create consciousness by itself gathering frequencies from an unknown source? Who the heck knows. My far out question is, how was the first brain ever created? haha. Either way, all of this money spent on playing God and creating brains could be used in a more practical sense. Then again, money itself isn't very practical for liberty and freedom to begin with.

Why do most people make stupid jokes about this topic?

There is another related thread and that is basically all the replies.

Is it because the implications are too frightening and people feel powerless?

Or maybe people don't want to think about possible implications? Or maybe don't want to think at all.

Anyway, I find it a bit odd.

To have a understanding of oneself.. to be aware, you must have outside stimulus to make you aware you are somwhere. If you were to Add some eyes, which are a direct link to the brain and some ears then you might get close. Imagine a deaf dumb and blind 1 day old. Helen Keller comes to mind..burnit

1 John 1–3._ 1Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are of God; because many false prophets have gone out into the world. 2By this you know the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is of God, 3and every spirit that does not confess that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is not of God.

Honestly since I was in elementary school hanging out with my friends we taught eachother to face our fear and laugh at pain. You know what I mean? ...laughter is a good stress reliever and when used in conjunction with stressful stimuli you can keep your wits about you and rise above the situation... sorta...

Seriously though, notice how the doctors are publically keeping the brains basically the size of a fetus that under current law could be aborted. I mean the real question to me in the scientific/moral realm is when do these brains get a soul and when does it go from some proteins we can do what we want to into life forms that have feelings.

If they discovered that these little brains had feelings do you think they would announce it? Probably no IMHO because that could rewrite the laws of ethics as they know it and they don't want to work with less brain then they already have...AHEM publically anyway.
You cannot destroy my vision when you see my vision undestroyed because I am just an undestroyer.

The "mini-brains" have survived for nearly a year, but did not grow any larger. There is no blood supply, just brain tissue, so nutrients and oxygen cannot penetrate into the middle of the brain-like structure.
 Quoting: article

So if it supplied with nutrients and oxygen, do you get a MeGa BrAiN! ?

Was that supposed to be funny or just ironic wording?

The team in Vienna do not believe there are any ethical issues at this stage, but Dr Knoblich said he did not want to see much larger brains being developed as that would be "undesirable".
