Staying with your analogy, if there were a trillion billion paintings painting themselves for billions of years, and they were surrounded by creatures that like to eat abstract paintings, so that the more a painting looked like something coherent the more likely it was to survive destruction, then yes, I would accept the possibility that the world would eventually be filled with beautiful complex paintings that painted themselves.
