Re: So is ISON going to hit the Sun????
True or not?

This guy casually says it...

NASA’s Deep Impact spacecraft is spinning out of control

"..Recent commands to put the craft in hibernation, or safe mode, were unsuccessful and Deep Impact is now spinning out of control, says principal investigator Michael A’Hearn of the University of Maryland in College Park.
....
One casualty of the mishap is that scientists have not received any of the expected image the craft was scheduled to take in August of Comet ISON, the icy space rock that could make a spectacle in the inner Solar System this fall before diving into the Sun, A’Hearn says."

my guess is that it will go around the Sun but not into the Sun 1dunno1

It's a sun diving comet. Lovejoy dived closer but came out OK, but these things are notoriously hard to predict. ISON passes through the UNSURE zone. It might fizzle, it might survive, it might break apart.

Maybe?

Right? My question is why everything we've been told says its a flyby, and this guy says its going into the sun? wtf

Re: So is ISON going to hit the Sun????
The math looks good for a *very close* flyby of the Sun. But it leaves some uncertainty as to the comet's final fate.

It won't hit the Sun, but is close enough that the comet itself may be horrendously damaged by its proximity to the Sun. If any pieces survive (or the comet survives largely intact), they (it) will have attained enough velocity to escape the Solar System.

That's really about it. All the rest is Doom-dross.

Comets kind of hit the Sun all the time...
 Quoting: 74444

yes but NOT the size of ISON. If it hits the sun it will unleash a massive Flare/CME
 Quoting: KcChamps

It will not hit, but it does not need to hit to unleash a CME.

Who cares!

With Obarmy on the case it's most unlikely that any of us will be around to see it even if it does!?

Because of hundreds of comets acting the same way before?

How many times must you drop an object before you can conclude that an object will fall when dropped?

Comets and orbits are the same thing.

So, yeah, I do know -- so I won't shut up. Thank you for the suggestion, though.

Yes of course, all comets behave the same.

That's not a comet, dimwit.

how can things like this, predicted decades ago, happen?

Orbit-wise? Yeah, they do. Newton's laws still operate just fine in the 21st century.

What do I win when ISON behaves as I predicted?

LOL fair enough. I would find it refreshing if continually predicting doom and continually failing somehow *cost* the predictor *something.*
