Ah, yes, newsgroups! The last cool place on the internet.

I used giganews for years until I got stuck with limited monthly bandwidth. I was quite happy with them. Their retention on binaries was far longer than advertised in popular groups, sometimes over a year.

I envy you, Astral. I say dive in and free up some hdd space!

Not really, remember kill buckets? You can get megalists of anti spam lists.

Otherwise here's some free Usenet servers. You need an nntp client though.

totally free nntp news servers which allow posting to the text-only newsgroups:
1. news.eternal-september.org 119 (email registration required)
2. reader.albasani.net 119 (email registration required)
3. nntp.aioe.org 119 (no registration whatsoever)

Try easynews.com

Been with them for years. Binary retention is fabulous.

Pay about $12 a month. Unused gigs get rolled over. Eventually you'll have more gigs banked than you could ever need.

Man, I miss the Flame Wars!
"Anarchism is not a romantic fable but the hardheaded realization, based of five thousand years of experience, that we cannot entrust the management of our lives to kings, priests, politicians, generals, or county commissioners." - Edward Abbey

"But whether the Constitution really be one thing, or another, this much is certain - that it has either authorized such a government as we have had, or has been powerless to prevent it. In either case, it is unfit to exist." -Lysander Spooner

"If they take the ship, they'll rape us to death, eat our flesh, and sew our skin into their clothing, and if we're very very lucky, they'll do it in that order." - Firefly

Re: Does anyone still browse/use newsgroups USENET?
from a star trek newsgroup posted on 9/3/2013

This page was born because of my righteous anger at Trek "fans" who repeatedly talk about "Playboy Kirk" or the Star Trek "Babes" in an appallingly sexist way. Here's proof that Kirk was NOT a playboy and Star Trek was NOT a sexist show. It was an anti-sexist show: one of the first, and one of the all-time best.

From now on, when anyone rolls into the Trek fan forum, spits their gum out onto the floor, and oafishly declares that Kirk was a heterosexual horndog who porked all of the chicks, I want you all to boldly and confidently SCOFF at them. Scoff also if they say that all the TOS women were bimbos in miniskirts who were nothing but eye-candy. The only proper reaction to such ill-informed opinions is round, sound scoffery... as I herein demonstrate:

If we are going to argue, let's argue about facts, not fantasies nor falsehoods.

There are still in excess of 140,000 binary newsgroups. Not all are free, some you have to pay for, but the problem is not the newsgroups, but the readers required to read them. They are not cheap, and not fully worth it. Of course most if not all are monitored by the NSA, FBI, and others, but what the hell aint these days.

Back in the old days, USENET was the original CT forum. Lots of QUALITY INFORMATION and actual real "insiders" posting stuff, back before the internet was tracked down to the room you're sitting in. I think USENET was the first place to start piecing together 9/11 news coverage inconsistencies, just a few days after it happened. Of course at that time, people thought you were an absolute nutcase if you thought it was an "inside job" now I see bumper stickers on cars. Way ahead of their time.

Way back in the late 90s someone posted a Pink Floyd riddle that, to this day, has never been solved.
