You have a long way to go.
Once you stop the processed and fast food,
you're sugar levels will likely level out.

Let me guess, you go to the 'doctor' 4 times per year. LoL

No it's not diabetes it's low blood sugars. If I don't have enough protein it won't stay in normal range. I have my own machine in case it gets low. The only time I would ever go in is if they started getting high. I don't eat out fast food makes me feel sick. I try to eat pretty healthy now compared to years ago.

With Diabetes the pancreas doesn't put out enough glucose, where as the hypoglycemic's pancreas puts out to much and it can make the body's glucose levels be like a roller coaster. It really stinks when it's low then you eat protein to get it back up and then it tries to level out. It wears down the body and does crazy things.

Re: preparing with limited income
Besides having a "BOB" what are some good ways of being prepared on a limited income while going to school. I know some people say to slowly get the means that is needed in case of an emergency situation such as a natural disaster but what if there isn't a huge amount of time left?
 Quoting: girl with open eyes

Pasta and water, remember the more protein and salt you eat the more water you need. Stock up on your medications if it applies, and some over the counter ones too. Always fill you gas tank at half. Get a gun and learn to use it.You can get a cc used gun for about 250 in decent shape. Keep some cash on you, in case we have a power outage or the government seizes bank accounts. Get some camping supplies, blankets in your car, garbage bags for your waste. Make a plan with close friends and family. People you can trust. I mean all this is on the net. What I just mentions can be done for about 500 dollars minus the cash on hand. We will have time, if we don't none of the above matter because it will be to late.
 Quoting: Madcracka

The gas is always something my dad taught me to do. I have an account but I never really keep money it. 500 dollars I can probably do pretty soon or at least part of it. I am more concerned about my child's welfare than anything.
 Quoting: girl with open eyes

With a kid, make a plan with friends and family. Better to be in a group then on your own. Because if you have it, and someone wants it. Put it this way, Katrina but much worse.hiding

Well friend, you have to have a plan in order to know what you will need?

Level of DOOM?

Earthquake?
Flood?
Economic Collapse?
Asteroid Strike? (Water, or Land)

All of the above?

A place to go?
People you can depend on?

Don't just think you can wander off into a field, or forest, and set up camp.

Sanitation is a primary concern.

I suggest things that shouldn't require much repair. If need be, the things outside should be able to repair or replace the things chosen. It's like a bow, slingshot, or blade, instead of a gun. Do you have a bullet maker and all the resources one will need to make them? Also, things to transport stuff like water. Something that won't break.

Also, bags for water while being tied to branches. Fire starters like a mirror, magnifying glass, and knowledge of like a bow kit or something.

Knowledge is essential.

All you really need is the things essential to reap what God provides. Whether that be food, shelter, or water..

There is also health..

Starving kids will eat. Being the parent means you gotta think about the but picture. Sometimes needs are more important than wants. Or they aren't and you hope you die early in an emergency.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 46322833

I understand what you're saying about the canned beans - ordinarily they'd be a good investment for protein and to fill your tummy. At the same time, kids can be maddening in their stubbornness when they don't want to do something, and when the World is crashing down you don't need to add dealing with a little kid who won't eat "Cause it's yucky".

So. What DOES he like? Something which is canned - Spaghettio's? Soups? Top Ramen? Peanut Butter/Jam or Jelly? I know, I know, all of the Organic Granola bunch will flame me for advising those sorts of things, but the main thing at that time will be getting him to eat ANYTHING, you can worry about the niceties later. By all means put beans on the shelf! But...... Stock up on anything he LIKES to eat too if it's canned or dried. Don't forget some individually-wrapped hard candy like Jolly Ranchers etc. which can be slipped into your pockets and carried for an emergency or if he's getting fussy/whiny which might give you away if you were hiding. Good plan to wash and sterilize your milk jugs to fill with water. Don't forget lots of blankets. It sounds liked you plan to shelter in place - if so, don't forget the old "college" bookshelves: bricks with boards across them, they can increase your storage space immensely!

Maybe every once in awhile you could play "camping" with your son, pretend that there is a power outage and "camp out" in your living room with flashlights/oil lamps (be VERY careful with flames or candles) instead of lights, eating a bit of your "camp food" (good for rotating it), reading stories/playing cards or board games instead of TV, building a fort with the couch pillows, and snuggling up together in lots of blankets. By having a good, relaxing time you'll both create some nice memories, and things won't be nearly as traumatic for him in case something DOES happen!

Re: preparing with limited income
I'm in the same boat. I posted a thread a couple weeks back, with the list of things I just bought, and a lot of members posted with some really amazing responses. I have a 3 yr. old & its hard trying to save $ for anything. I'm adding to it in little bits each week.

Also, buying a gas can each paycheck & filling it is a damn good idea I didn't think of before....should've been the first thing after water. Especially when gas prices start going up, which is already happening.

Thread: Prepping & Supplies for SHTF
 Quoting: Halo2Alexis™

Be very VERY careful! Gas is FLAMMABLE and can EXPLODE!

Also, there are so many chemicals in the gas now to make it "less polluting" but in turn those chemicals begin to separate and deteriorate in a very short amount of time; all last winter I fought with my car, sometimes it wouldn't start after I didn't drive it for a few days. Come to find out that, because I'd been topping it off anytime I went anywhere before I went back home (so as not to be caught without a full tank), the gas was not being rotated enough and it was deteriorating in quality. The remedy ended up being to add a bottle of gas-line water remover every so often and running it down to 1/4 tank or slightly lower and then filling it with fresh gas and a bottle of Sta-Bil.

At the very least, if you are going to store ANY gas, add some of that Sta-Bil and don't keep the gas cans where you live!

A water bob?

You're already ahead of most people... Start with peanutbutter and crackers!!! M&Ms wouldn't hurt...and honey!

Basics (rice, beans, pasta, potato flakes).
Then...what to add to them?

Cans of soup, chili, spag. sauce, garlic, ketchup, spam, etc.)

Keep in mind...I'm not talking about a spam sammich.

I'm talking about a huge pot of 9 bean soup that I diced a can of spam into.

Start with the fillers (rice, beans, etc.)

And then add something to it.

A cup of rice is awesome when you add a can of campbells cream of chicken soup to it!

So many responses from this it's amazing. He loves PB and J, crackers and cheese, tons of fruit, he likes pasta and ketchup so spaghettios would work lol. I should get some energy bars. I think my meal bar that the armys have that are nothing but calories is about to expire. I need to organize my cabinet that has the emergency food and see what I need. Will most likely do that in the next few days. Yes kids can be really picky, I think we have all been there in that stage. I really hate rotating foods out it's so tedious but the freeze dried foods are very spendy and to much salt in them. I do have some camping freeze dried foods in my BOB. Raisins are always good to get, dried fruits.

Food choices are simply a matter of growing and expanding your tastes in food and beans and legumes are an excellent source of many nutrients and store well for extended periods of time.

Oats and other grains make for a nutritious breakfast along with powdered milk and snacks of popcorn add variety to your diet.

Seriously do you believe an inexpensive source of food that you enjoy can be easily found consider this will you be that fussy if conditions precluded obtaining foods that you prefer.

As a child I was not allowed to be picky and spoiled as my parents monetary resources were limited thus if I turned my nose up to something nothing else was offered it was that simple.

If you are on a budget and looking for nutritious meals then some sacrifices will be encountered.

Re: preparing with limited income
One thing that is often looked over, but is extremely important Is your own physical preparednes.

If you are not physically fit you won't be able to hike with that 40 pound rucksack.

Becoming fit does not really cost anything financially. It's an investment of your time and energy for return of your own health.

I do Tacfit commando. It's a type of high-intensity interval training, That incorporates flexibility mobility and recovery into the program.

All that is required is a yoga mat.

I can deal with the bag. It's the necessities I am really talking about. BUT what you are saying does make sense.

Try purchasing a quantity of canned foods that you might normally eat.

Canned tuna is good for protein.

As someone else mentioned beans are good as well. You might get a few pounds of dried beans and rice.

If you have a water filter and a rocket stove which is portable, you can make food and survive.

Do not overlook water if possible to have stored.

A first aid kit and some form of protection is wise also.

Good luck on the journey toward being prepared.

Best.

Canned beans are cheap

Eww I can't stand beans aside from Mild Chili but I meant besides that, and I have a very picky boy too.
 Quoting: girl with open eyes

You already doomed to start with the ewwwwing.
Once things get bad as they are going to the word picky wont be in your vocabulary.I suggest you start eating a few of those terrible survival foods now so you wont suffer so bad when you have to start eating them and you will...

This is correct. When that stomach is empty, growling and it gets really, really bad, anyone will eat the beans, or whatever.

Re: preparing with limited income
Keep in mind...I'm not talking about a spam sammich.

I'm talking about a huge pot of 9 bean soup that I diced a can of spam into.

Start with the fillers (rice, beans, etc.)

And then add something to it.

A cup of rice is awesome when you add a can of campbells cream of chicken soup to it!

Beans are ok for the mix, but can you imagine if that all you ate. If I'm gonna be in a bomb shelter with a person that eats beans only, I'm gonna kick that asshole outside.

Physical prepping is nothing without spiritual prepping first, and the very act of physical prepping can compound people into being less spiritually prepped through fear and panic, fear closes the mind and isolates us from source, intuition and knowledge (all necessary for any survival)

Stock up with seeds, raisins, nuts, water and weapon, enough to last you about a month, wait for shit to hit, and whatever disaster comes first it always results in the same first effect of empty shelves, so you give yourself a months breathing/ thinking space on what your next move is, and in this time you will see waht came first and what is next and so will be able to act in accordance, and so long as you are ridding yourself of all fear in this period, your intuition will come to fruit and you will know what needs to be done.
