Crumbling comet spotted
By Elise Kleeman Staff Writer
LA CAÑADA FLINTRIDGE - Since 1995, Comet 73P/ Schwassmann-Wachmann 3 has been crumbling.
No longer a single icy dirtball streaming a tail of gases, it is now a streak of at least 58 chunks. And, for the first time, astronomers have captured a sweeping panorama of almost all of them.
"It's not often that we get to have such an object come so close to Earth that we can study it in such great detail," said astronomer Mark Sykes of the Planetary Science Institute in Tucson, Ariz. "It gives us a lot of good clues as to what it is made up of and how it is constructed."
Sykes and his colleagues used the Spitzer Space Telescope to photograph the comet debris. The Jet Propulsion Laboratory-managed scope detected even gravel-sized comet bits by recording the heat they gave off after being warmed by the sun.
The Schwassmann-Wachmann 3 fragments formed as ice melted away from the comet's surface each time it circled the sun. Originally, the comet broke into four pieces, but many of these have since crumbled even further.
"It looks like the fresh pieces have a lot of ice when they break off," said Caltech astronomer Bill Reach. "That's one thing that's neat about looking at the breakup - you get to see the interior of the comet. Usually, we see the crust."
Astronomers will use the Spitzer image to calculate the amount of comet debris and reconstruct the breakup, Reach said.
"This will be just a whole bunch of fresh new information and give us a great amount of data about how this guy was constructed," Sykes said.
Unlike the subjects of many of Spitzer's subjects - including newborn stars and black holes - it won't take a multimillion-dollar telescope to glimpse this comet.
It can be seen in the night sky between the constellations Cygnus and Pegasus. It's dim, but should be easier to see as the moon wanes.
"It should be visible with binoculars tonight and next week," Reach said.
A light meteor shower should also occur starting late next week as tiny bits of comet crash into the Earth's atmosphere. For the best views, dodge city lights by driving into the San Gabriel Mountains or heading for the desert.

That is the earliest prediction for the arrival of the meteor shower, late next week, putting it about May 19th. Take the respected comet researcher Gary Kronk's prediction of early June for the arrival, and you have a window for the meteor shower between May 19th and June 10th.
I tend to like the prediction of of around May 25th, based on plotting the times of when the known fragments will pass, and the distance the known fragments will pass, it makes a line straight down to zero distance (impacts) at around May 25th, where some of these smaller fragments will hit.
Maybe sooner, maybe later, but there are enough respected scientists who are now predicting a meteor shower that I think somethings gonna happen. This could be the biggest astronomical event of our lifetime, or it could be the end of all mankind. |

My question is, keeping it in the $100-$150 range, which product, specs, etc would be best to buy?
I know most hate Walmart, but they have one on clearance for $100 that looks like it would be a rather decent one, with an extra gadget that gives a talking tour of the stars on any given night. It isnt a Meade or Galileo, but for the life of me, I cannot recall it's product name, but think it started with a B. I've been trying to remember, but just cant pull it out of my brain, lol. |

Seriously, you aren't going to get much out of a scope only a hundred bucks. I have a very nice Meade computerized telescope, it is WELL worth the price. Visit my website...

Anonymous Coward User ID: 90730 5/13/2006 3:26 AM | | Re: We are in fact being impacted by Comet 73P right now! | Quote | Hi Coldreboot,
No, it wasnt a Meade, and as I'm looking on Ebay, I'm thinking it was a Bushnell? It isnt one Walmart normally carries, and the store in Albert Lea will actually sign to receive when a wrong product is shipped, so at times they get the stuff that you never see them have.
Hi Heidi,
I wish I could afford a better one, but unfortunately I cant. We are on such a tight budget the way it is, it's hard to just make ends meet, however, my husband is due to get a bonus check soon, and I'm hoping I can talk him into letting me use some of his OT money until that bonus comes in. He knows how badly I've wanted one for about the last 4 years, and he also looks at them with me, but has never offered for me to just "buy it", lol. So I am feeling that he may be a bit reluctant in this.
I will check with my parents though to see if they would be willing to front me some $ to bump the alloted amount just a tad. I do know there is one that I've looked at for $248 or $298, cant recall, and I think that was a Meade. |

I know what you mean about the cash. I use most of my extra money for preps for all the doomer stuff we talk about on here.
I have wanted one of those nifty models you can hook up to your laptop for a loooong time, but there is no way I can drop hundreds of dollars on a bad ass telescope right now. One day, hopefully... if we are all still here.
