The USSR sent troops into Afghanistan, because they thought the US was trying to create a Caliphate which would threaten the soft under belly of the Soviet Union (which it was not). The Americans thought that the USSR was trying to gain access to a warm water port (which would threaten US interest) through Afghanistan (which it was not). Al qaeda was the Arab contingent of the operation. Not the Americans. The Americans worked with Northern Alliance. Saudi has always been the key behind the besat Wrong. The Saudi's are puppets.
