Start > Run, then type "msconfig" without the quotes, a popup scren will appear.

Click the startup tab and see what is starting with Windows, also have you defragged and cleaned up the hard drive lately.

Finally anti-virus scan and trojan scan...

edit: To check for installed ram, right click on the My Computer icon and select properties from the popup menu...

There will be a new popup systems property screen, it will tell you how much physical ram you have.

then you can see how many GHz and ram you have.

You should at least have 1 gig of ram, software now days are getting more demanding.

If you lie to play games, get 2 gig of ram.

Re: PC Help Needed
if you use bittorrent to download stuff, i suggest you go grab AVG 7.1 and ad-aware. With ad-aware you can use ad watch and thats a good thing.

i use both and i have also Spybot search and destroy.

But with AVG and Ad aware you should be fine.

thats what i use and never have any prblems anymore.

A pair of 512Mb DDR400 sticks are cheap and cheerful, your system will not know what has hit it!

Use this [link to www.crucial.com] to see what type of ram is suitable for your computer.

still check and ask with the computer guy near your place.

i can tell your computer is slow by looking at the component, but they might be more apte to make suggestions as to what you need.

Re: PC Help Needed
It's definitely a lack of RAM.

I would look at stopping these two progs loading too...

realsched
qttask

Real player and Quicktime are resource hogs and there is no reason for them to leech RAM at the start unless you want them to.

Ideally get rid of both of them and replace them with Media Player Classic, with QT alt and Real Alt installed.

An easier way to disable startup programs from cluttering your system tray would be to install Winpatrol. This gives you the added benefit of realtime monitoring additions, browser hijack attempts and preventing unauthorised host file rewrites at a very low resource overhead.

And they are all free :D

[link to www.winpatrol.com]

Winpatrol. If you are unsure about how safe it is read a few reviews before you install it. It hasn't had a bad review.

The first tab in the program window is the startup folder. Highlight the program you want and click the disable button at the bottom. Simple as that :)

The site itself has lots of help if you get lost.

[link to www.winpatrol.com]

I always install Winpatrol on every machine that I'm asked to clean up as it can help loading speeds immensely.

Don't install the Plus version unless you want to thank the author for such a great program (one off fee of $25 and access to some extra facilities)

The free version is great on its own.

As your RAM is so low use another free program to get rid of a lot of rubbish before you scan for spyware, virus scan or defrag.

Ccleaner

[link to www.ccleaner.com]

It really will speed up the process but with only 128 Meg of RAM it's gonna take a while.

The best long term measure is to buy more RAM as soon as possible.

The poster above gave a great site that has a tool for checking which RAM type you need. (Crucial.com)

You are right about the minimal resource needs but as far as I can see it doesnt support Real or does it seam with real alternative?

System Warning Change thingie came up cos you used msconfig.

That doesn't happen with Winpatrol.

Use ccleaner to get rid of crap.
scan for spyware using any or all of Defender, Adaware and spybot.
Defrag.

It will take a few hours probably.

Order more RAM

Good luck

Re: PC Help Needed
Fast5, these two realsched and qttask programs are TSR's, meaning they terminate and stay resident in memory.

They are not resource hogs, going by the startup list you have supplied you are not running any A/V or firewall so you are likely seriously infected.

Get more ram from the link I previously posted, or just find out the type you need at least and get it locally if you prefer.

A minimum of 512Mb will be fine for browsing and general PC work, but not gaming. But then your system does not have a graphics card installed anyway.

Do a hard drive defragment, that will likely help a lot as well...
