Massive starfish die-off near British Columbia baffles scientists

The waters off British Columbia, Canada, are littered with dead starfish, and researchers have no idea what’s causing the deaths. At the end of August, marine biologist and scuba enthusiast Jonathan Martin was out on his usual Saturday dive with some friends when he noticed something unusual. “We just started noticing dead starfish that looked like they had their arms chopped off,” Martin said.

“It really struck a chord in other divers who were seeing it on Facebook and social media, both locally and as far away as California, who had been seeing similar things,” Martin said. “[The starfish] seem to waste away, ‘deflate’ a little, and then just … disintegrate. The arms just detach, and the central disc falls apart. It seems to happen rapidly, and not just dead animals undergoing decomposition, as I observed single arms clinging to the rock faces, tube feet still moving, with the skin split, gills flapping in the current. I’ve seen single animals in the past looking like this, and the first dive this morning I thought it might be crabbers chopping them up and tossing them off the rocks. Then we did our second dive in an area closed to fishing, and in absolutely amazing numbers. The bottom from about 20 to 50 feet [6 to 15 meters] was absolutely littered with arms, oral discs, tube feet, gonads and gills … it was kind of creepy.”

Wasn't there a starfish die off near japan when fukushima first happened? I did some searching but could not find anything, but I swear I remember reading something about that.

Well they are on the sea floor (and eating off the sea floor) and the closest to possible outgasing of methane or hydrogen sulfide from the sea floor due to tectonic/volcanic activity.

I started a thread a few days ago, Watch on the Portland(Oregon) and Washington Area, maybe I posted it in a rush, too early because I was expecting a bigger Quake (around Mag 5) in that Area or Off Coast of that Area, because of the (in my eyes) suspicious activity, I still expect something bigger and now reading the Starfish die off story, that Magnitude might have been an understatement, if it is related to tectonic/volcanic activity .

The whole Alaska-Canada-BC-Washington-Oregon Activity is not good and I hope that the people there are spared from a huge earthquake happening.

PS: I don´t think it´s radiation, or you would see much more die off there, because starfish are also prey and like I said, starfish wouldn´t be the only ones dying.

Yes I agree been watching and tracking that whole area expecting either Cook Inlet/Denali Fault here or Cape Yakutat/Queen Charlotte Island depending on which way it shifts. Have lots of research, links, info on FOG thread with graphics and reports if you want them :)

Yeah why?

I have thought for a while the mass die offs relate to earthquakes, but if history repeats, the quake should be on the other side of the pacific ring. If my surely flawed theory is correct anyway 5a

Species of animals who's Eco-equilibrium is more fragile and less capable of dealing with changes or imbalance? Starfish are likely to fit here? Pure speculation.

Could be from BP's toxic soup disbursement of Corexit 9500 and 9527 traveling along the coast stream. Remember reading a report scientist predicted it would take a few years to effect Washington/Oregon/Canadian coastlines and all it's sealife. That there would be mass die-offs of unexpected species due to their systems being compromised and large areas would become dead zones. idk
