Several lakes are now overflowing which is now causing rivers to look like a class 4 rapid. Totally amazing pictures coming in on the local news stations.

Officials said an earthen dam in Big Elk Meadows has given way. A reverse notification was sent to residents in Pinewood Springs and Blue Mountain, warning them that river water levels will rise quickly and that they should be prepared to move to higher ground. Another reverse notification sent to residents in the Big Elk Meadows area warned residents that other dams in that area, off County Road 47, were in danger of giving way due to flooding. UPDATE: Out-of-state Assistance Requested to Combat Colorado Flooding

Denver, CO (September 12, 2013 12:00 PM) –The Salvation Army responded to its first request for assistance from Boulder County this morning around 1:00AM. In the hours following this initial call, Salvation Army disaster response teams have worked alongside the State of Colorado, Boulder County, Larimer County and Jefferson County to develop a relief and assistance plan.

Recently, The Salvation Army requested the immediate deployment of its emergency disaster personnel from Ogden, Utah, to provide additional assistance as rains continue to fall in Colorado. Casper’s disaster service team has been placed on standby and is prepared to deploy to Colorado when called.

Currently, The Salvation Army is providing disaster relief in the following locations:

Aurora, CO

· The Salvation Army’s Aurora location at 802 Quari Court is now an evacuation point.

· Emergency disaster services personnel are currently preparing for the possibility that this location will become a feeding and assistance site.

Boulder County

· The Salvation Army is currently providing disaster relief supplies to the Boulder County Airport via police escort.

· A Salvation Army mobile feeding unit has deployed to provide 150 meals for first responders and rescue workers at the Boulder County Incident Command Post located at Linden Avenue and Broadway.

The Salvation Army is on standby to provide disaster relief assistance at shelters in the following counties pending road access: El Paso County, Larimer County and Jefferson County.

On July 31, 1976, during the celebration of Colorado's centennial, the Big Thompson Canyon was the site of a devastating flash flood that swept down the steep and narrow canyon, claiming the lives of 143 people, 5 of whom were never found. This flood was triggered by a nearly stationary thunderstorm near the upper section of the canyon that dumped 300 millimeters (12 inches) of rain in less than 4 hours (more than 3/4 of the average annual rainfall for the area). Little rain fell over the lower section of the canyon, where many of the victims were.

Around 9 p.m., a wall of water more than 6 meters (20 ft) high raced down the canyon at about 6 m/s (14 mph), destroying 400 cars, 418 houses and 52 businesses and washing out most of U.S. Route 34.[5] This flood was more than 4 times as strong as any in the 112-year record available in 1976, with a discharge of 1,000 cubic meters per second (35,000 ft³/s).
