I too had an encounter like the OP describes.
It was some 'dog-like' creature, sniffing around with its nose and mouth on my face.
Funny thing was I wasn't scared.
I believe if totem animals/spirits are real then the wolf/dog is my totem.
We don't know why exactly the natives believed in such things. Don't assume evil.
Sleep paralysis is simply the body shutting itself down and rerouting resources. Nothing evil about it.
