This is what happens when lightning strikes your house
My house was hit about 7 years ago and it was one of the worst experiences you can have. I would rather swim with hungry sharks than have my house struck again.
I saw this posted it describes what its like when lightning strikes your house very well.-

Have you ever been close to a lightning strike or been hit by lightning?

I have. Having a backstage pass for nature's sound and light show isn't something that fades from your memory. Ever.

I was around nine years old, and it was a humid summer night back at the old homestead in Rockford, IL. I remember sitting at the screen door watching the night sky light up as a whopper of a thunderstorm rolled in. To this day I can sit and be completely hypnotized by the roiling of clouds sweeping towards my puny self, spewing lances of angry energy downward.

I can completely understand why the ancients considered lightning weapons thrown by gods.

School was out, so my folks were pretty lax on the bedtimes. After the downpour started, watching the lightning wasn't as entertaining so I was sitting in a chair in the living room reading a book ("A Wrinkle in Time" by Madeleine L'Engle. Funny how these details stick with me). My Sister, Grandmother, and Mom were all watching MASH. My Dad had gone to bed early: he had to go in to work on Saturday morning for something.

About 10:15 PM Thor decided he didn't like our home. Nope, didn't care for it at all.

When the lightning struck, the noise was deafening. I have stood less than thrity yards from a Harrier Jump Jet taking off, and less than five yards from a speaker at a Metallica concert and I can tell you that is a mere whisper compared to the noise at ground zero of a lightning hit.

It felt like some huge hand picked up the floor and shook it. Pictures flew off the wall, dishes cracked on the shelves, and I fell out of my chair. Our dog shot over to me shaking in fear with her tail between her legs, and I thought something was wrong because her mouth kept opening and closing but the only noise was a high-pitched whine. I realized I was temporarily deaf. I probably have hearing damage to this day. All the blonde peach fuzz on my arms and legs was sticking up and tingling from the charge in the air.

About a minute later my father staggered into the room in his underwear, white as a ghost and covered in dust. The headboard of his bed was against the back wall of my parent's bedroom, with space on either side to climb in. What had happened was that the lightning blew holes on either side of the bed he was sleeping in, and covered him in plaster dust.

It's the only time in my life I can remember seeing my Dad scared shitless. My dad is a Marine who served in an EOD (explosives ordinance disposal) unit. I've seen him worried more times than I can count, but scared? Hell no.

Dad said the light was so bright it was like staring into the sun, even with his eyes closed. What's amazing is that the lightning didn't scorch anything in the room. Not the floor, not the dresser, nothing.

Just those two holes, both about an inch in diameter, smoking in the corners of the room with a stench of ozone and burnt insulation.

My dad said later that this was "pretty goddamn low on the list of ways he wanted to wake up from a deep sleep" :)

We called the fire department and got out of the house. The firemen inspected the attic and pronounced it safe. What's even weirder is that there was no hole in the roof. The lightning must have conducted through a nail or the TV antenna

Wondering if you have had the effects of being in the lightning's induction field like I did when I was 16.

Was in 4 feet of water just got done hooking a tow chain up to the A-frame of a car, about 11pm at night, reaching up standing in the water for the hand rail to climb up into the cab of the wrecker. Lightning hit a telephone pole ten feet away, threw me about six feet. Seeing stars and massive ringing in my ears, I find I am underwater and don't even know which way is up, ears still roaring and ringing, I feel hands grabbing for me and pulling me up out of the water, I am confused and dazed, my second cousin had pulled me out of the water, this was a flash flood with 4 feet of water flowing down mainstreet of the small town, Sedgwick, Co. in 1969. My ears still ring constantly to this day. Lots of joint problems and other neurological glitches ever since.

You are lucky to be alive, that's all I can tell you, and so am I.

Not that old, we had some on our house. Even yet in the 1960's there were many houses that had them, before the big housing boom back then.

a good friend of mine lost everything he owned about 2 months ago when lightning struck the apartment complex where he lived. It started a fire in the roofing. It was a 2 story apartment complex with three buildings. The fire spread across the roof to all three buildings 32 units out of 48 were totally lost. Everyone got out alive, but it was a horrible experience.

Re: This is what happens when lightning strikes your house
i was 10 years old when our house was struck. it came thru the tv antena and thru the TV. a streck went thru the room and there was a black burn on the opposite wall. It also took out the AC that was in the window above the TV.

They said if any of us was in the room we would have been hit and killed. but we all were sitting at the dinning table eating when it happen. No fires but it fried the wires that the TV was pulled into. also they said it was because it had a path to follow is why we didn't have alot of damage.

Lightening is very strange and dangerous one never know how and when it will strike. Thank God Mom makes us eat at the table and not in the livingroom.

Exodus 19

16 And it came to pass on the third day in the morning, that there were thunders and lightnings, and a thick cloud upon the mount, and the voice of the trumpet exceeding loud; so that all the people that was in the camp trembled.

Psalm 77

18 The voice of thy thunder was in the heaven: the lightnings lightened the world: the earth trembled and shook.

Took direct hit in 97 in house. Came thru roof antennae. Could here a zipping sound all thru house. Took out 3 ceramic fuses.

Was online in 2002 and saw mega flash across street hitting utility pole. Blew a 440 line off pole which began spewing 30 ft fountain of fire, after call to 911 it blew three times, totally electrifing area with thunderous booms. Frantically unplugged all major appliances. The line fused into the cement of street and blew a 10 ft hole out of it.

Lived in highrise condo building on shores of lake erie 86-91 with a fabulous lake downtown view. Had a rooftop garden I spent much time in.
Saw some crazy storms blow in from canada, literally saw lake water turn green in prelude to massive storms. Saw a freighter take a direct hit one day and a plume of smoke coming out of it.

It's pretty awesome right enough.

I was standing about 10 metres from a wooden power pole when it got hit (I was out videoing the storm).

It was THE brightest flash and THE loudest sound I've ever heard - and I've been up close to Harriers as well :-)

Re: This is what happens when lightning strikes your house
my loyal dog was standing next to me as we got hit. i was thrown by heat 5.5 ft backwards. it was the most massive heat, light and the loudest noise i've ever heard. ended up blowing everything electrical in the house (phones,'puter, everything)

neither of us care for storms much anymore and both of us can tell hours before any storm is close. she lays on my feet if/when there's lightning now.

and i worn ya...you can get hit sitting in your car/truck...you can get hit standing outside...you can get hit inside...

if you hear thunder...take it as a warning to get inside. lightning can hit before and after a storm.

Do not use a phone during an electrical storm. The lightening will follow the wires into the phone head set and blow your head off. naughty

Re: This is what happens when lightning strikes your house
just yesterday was driving thru across town and entering a very dramtic down poor from the approaching storm. the winds started to pick up and lighting was starting to strike all over the area rapidly.

winds were in excess of 50 mph heading north and then as i was driving west the winds had swapped to the south at 50 mph. like a mini tornado was starting to form not more than 3 miles from the NSA building in utah. when lighting struck the ground right beside my car while driving. i coudl see and feel the boom at the same time and the procussion could be felt thru the car. pretty intense strike

Another time me and my buddy were storm chasing and went upon the bench of mountain on TIMP. we drove up the hill and parked next to a water storage tank. we then like morons decided to getup on top of the tank. seconds later we both saw the bolt strike the power line directly above our heads. and during that instant that you see the flash and the hear and fee the sound felt like a year. needless to say we ran
