SPIES, surveillance cameras and bag searches may sound like the key elements of an on-screen thriller, but they are being deployed for real off screen to catch criminals trying to make pirate copies of The Da Vinci Code.

The extraordinary and unprecedented measures follow a highly successful campaign by distributors Sony Pictures to stop bootleggers putting the movie on the internet before its Cannes premiere on Wednesday.
