Astronomer talking about ISON: unchanged magnitude for 4 month period.

Magnitude didn't change because it's a spaceship, duh!

ISON discovered almost 1 year ago, and for a third of that time the magnitude did not change (according to this astronomer). how can this be possible since its been heading our way inbound towards the sun ever since it was spotted?

Interestingly that is one theory. Hoagland speculated that Phobos was a spacecraft. "Daniel" suggested that arks from the bible were spacecraft with asteroids being a perfect pre-built craft. I suppose it's possible.

How would he know exactly that ISON is the oldest comet from the Oort Cloud?

The whole concept of an "Oort Cloud" is pure speculation, as are "black holes," "dark matter," "The Big Bang" and any other number of the assumptions of THEORETICAL PHYSICS trumpeted, routinely, as accepted fact.

The magnitude, obviously, should have increased by now. That is weird....

but that "all seeing man in the sky watching everything you do" that's real huh....LOL

Maybe something to due with velocity vector. Magnitude does not increase even though the object is in motion. Long time since i did physics though.

Thread derailment is a common feature.

However - this astronomer is just stating the facts he observes - so you cant really contradict that.

Of course you can go ad hominem or you can try to disprove - but until that these observations must prevail.

Doesn't matter...from our point of view it should....unless he is using a kind of distortion field to protect itself during his voyage or just that it what is produce after wards. Just saying..

Perhaps for the same reason as the sun is quiet now during it's active period: The brown dwarf.

I have been out of the science scene for a while ever since I realized modern day science is full of it. But what exactly is "magnitude", are we talking about mass here?

ISON is 3 miles wide, a brown dwarf would be at minimum larger than the earth.....

Yes.
Specifically, the brightness we see, which is affected by distance, as well as the intrinsic brightness of the object.

An increase of one magnitude equates to about 2½ times as bright (2.512 to be exact)
2 magnitudes = about 6.3 x as bright
3 magnitudes = about 16 x as bright
4 magnitudes = about 40 x as bright
An increase of 5 magnitudes is 100 times as bright.

And magnitude figures go DOWN as brightness INCREASES.
The dimmest stars you can see by naked-eye from a dark rural site are about magnitude 6
The brightest stars are magnitude 1 or less
Venus is about -4 (minus four)
Full Moon is about -13
The Sun is about - 27
The 14 magnitude difference between the Full Moon and the Sun, equates to about 400,000 x the brightness

ISON is currently at about 11.7, and I can remember only a few weeks ago it was at about 12.5
A difference of 0.8 magnitude - which is about twice as bright.
