"It's welfare reform 2.0. It is pretty exciting," says Rep. Tim Huelskamp, R-Kan., one lawmaker who has been pushing to chop $40 billion from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP, during the next 10 years. "I think it is a very compassionate approach, targeting and reforming food stamps from being a way of life."
 Quoting: Melrox

Who said anything about a 'way-of-life'?

What's so 'very compassionate' about this?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 47058396

It IS a way of life, when there are generations of kids who have NO IDEA how to get $$$ for food except with the EBT cards.

It IS compassionate to give people a hand UP, instead of a hand OUT, and make them dependent on Uncle Sam, or anybody else's uncle, for that matter.

It IS compassionate to TEACH people how to be self-sufficient and learn to FEED THEMSELVES.

Government dependence *IS* a way of life, and a pretty miserable one, at that. Why anyone would be in favor of having a government subsidized "underclass" of people is beyond me.

This is a compassionate approach because it weans those without legitimate needs from the program over a period of years, instead of just cutting them off.

Duh...

This. There's a small store in my town that lets people buy cigs. and alcohol with food cards too. They just ring it up under "Food" in the cash register.

It's sickening.

Here's an article from 2005 that was reposted in 2009

[link to www.freerepublic.com]

The authors noted that the number of Americans subsisting on welfare -- about 8 million, at the time -- probably represented less than half the number who were technically eligible for full benefits. They proposed a "massive drive to recruit the poor onto the welfare rolls." Cloward and Piven calculated that persuading even a fraction of potential welfare recipients to demand their entitlements would bankrupt the system. The result, they predicted, would be "a profound financial and political crisis" that would unleash "powerful forces … for major economic reform at the national level."

NYC welfare food is shipped in barrels to the Dominican Republic – then sold on the black market

Food-stamp fraud in New York has turned into foreign aid — to black-market profiteers in the Dominican Republic.

Last week, The Post revealed how New Yorkers on welfare are buying food with their benefit cards and shipping it in blue barrels to poor relatives in the Caribbean.

But not everyone is giving the taxpayer-funded fare to starving children abroad. The Post last week found two people hawking barrels of American products for a profit on the streets of Santiago.

“It’s a really easy way to make money, and it doesn’t cost me anything,” a seller named Maria-Teresa said Friday.

More:

[link to nypost.com]

The rip-off is apparently so commonplace that giant plastic barrels used to pack up to $2,000 worth of provisions are sold in supermarkets across the Big Apple that cater to Caribbean immigrants.

The scamming sibling pays $75 per barrel to transport the items to the DR through Mott Haven’s Luciano Shipping. Sometimes the family fraudsters take advantage of a special: three barrels for the price of two.

To me, it is a direct admission that the Democrats know damn well that their economic agenda has failed, kinda like Bernanke announcing that he was "just kidding" about tapering QE. That was a REAL doozy: QE hasn't worked, so we can't stop it now. Only a liberal could use that sort pretzel logic. And always does.

It is not the government's responsibility to motivate people...natural consequences do that so long as others don't interfere. Neither is it their purview to reward the behavior of individuals, be that behavior "good" or "bad".

Welfare and other "social benefits" reward bad behavior, plain and simple. THAT's why it must stop.

This is like patching a massive hole with a tiny piece of duct-tape, while saying "Hey everyone, look! I care, and I'm trying to fix this!"

How 'bout first reinstate glass-steagall, declare the trillions of debt to foreign banks 'illegal'. Maybe after that we can address inefficiency of social programs.

But no, that would *actually* benefit America, and our politicians DON'T WANT THAT.

Food stamps are just hiding the fact that there isn't that much left to do ATM.

What are they going to do? Damn near everyone has a car or two, place to live, TVs, computers, phones, iCrap, game systems.

Railroads, roads, airports, dams, skyscrapers a whole list of stuff is already there and some of it ghost towning.

Evan at that most jobs are just busy work and it's only a matter of time before a lot of them get automated away.

Plus they are trying to license, insure, regulate and fee small businesses and especially start ups out of business. Now they are starting on the medium size businesses.

Game plan we all starve in a hovel.

Re: GOP bill to cut 40 Billion dollars in FOOD STAMPS!
How about just investigating the open fraud that occurs.

Start at the top of the 'food chain'.

A federal grand jury indicted 10 Baltimore business owners or operators on charges of stealing nearly $7 million from food assistance programs by agreeing to debit cash for beneficiaries without selling food — then keeping a cut of the proceeds.

The owner of a corner grocery in West Baltimore called "Second Obama Express" is accused of obtaining more than $2 million in payments for food sales that never occurred, a practice that authorities call "food stamp trafficking." Eight others are accused of taking between $348,000 and $1.4 million.

"Taxpayers fund the food stamp program to put food on the tables of needy recipients, not to put money in the pockets of greedy criminals," U.S. Attorney Rod J. Rosenstein said. "Food producers and distributors benefit when food stamp funds are used to buy food, and honest storeowners work hard to earn a profit by actually selling food."

There's always ways to circumvent.

Leave it alone or go back to commodities.

Of all the free housing, free cell phones, money for having children that people can't afford and money going to other countries, focusing on FOOD stamps is quite ridiculous. It's really hard to qualify (unless you know someone). We are a first world country atm still, stupid to go after feeding our own.

 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 25030473
Perhaps, but maybe some elected folks think they should do the right things, the things their constituencies voted for them to do, and worry later about making the case. Even if you think they're all bought and paid for, it's still possible that some of these folks have some remaining concept of what they are supposed to be doing in Washington.

Thinking like that in the first post I quoted, while it is certainly correct, results in sacred cows. The creation of sacred cows, things too sacred to touch, are the exact thing liberals depend on when expanding the government's control over the people.

If Republicans stop fighting the creation and maintenance of these socialist sacred cows, they may pick up a few votes from the people who worship them. However, they'll lose the votes from the people who sent them to Washington to kill and eat those sacred cows. Presumably, the latter group is more numerous, accounting for why they got elected in the first place.

Seems a pretty simple choice to me, despite the fact that you'll never read about this choice in the LMSM.

So, they're going to cut the SNAP program, and implement Obamacare at the same time? So for people who actually need help, they are going to be stretching it even farther just to pay for health care. And on that note, tons of companies are cutting hours so they don't have to offer health insurance and instead have their employers get obamacare on their own? This certainly is a doozy.

1. Cut foodstamps.
2. Implement Obamacare.
3. Cut hours = less pay.
