"It's welfare reform 2.0. It is pretty exciting," says Rep. Tim Huelskamp, R-Kan., one lawmaker who has been pushing to chop $40 billion from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP, during the next 10 years. "I think it is a very compassionate approach, targeting and reforming food stamps from being a way of life."

Do you know how manny families will be affected by this? How many children ? The mentality that everybody that is lazy takes food stamps is ridiculous! Do you know how many families have lost everything and that is their only meal until they get better? It happened to me ! To proud ,I can survive and I did ,but there was a time in between that I needed help, for my children and my sanity and their health! It lasted until I found work ', but for 4 months that help me, and I am greatful. They maybe don't care they have money, they will never be hungry or the doctor go to their house, they have insurance paid by us! Heck yea I am grateful.what they are doing is wrong.

Re: GOP bill to cut 40 Billion dollars in FOOD STAMPS!
Everyone who is on food stamps is not lazy or illegal. Many are working families needing some help to make sure their children eat.
Don't give me that if you cant take care of them then don't have them BS many lost damn good paying jobs and are not able to afford everything such as rent, lights , water etc.
There is nothing wrong with using food stamps for a while till a person gets back on their feet and not make it a lifetime commitment. For those who are abusing the systems they are the ones who need to be kicked off. Reforming government assistance is only one small thing we need to reform the entire government and make it possible for folks to live the american dream again.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 42044103

Yes I think that's the idea of the reform isn't it -- to prevent people from living forever on food stamps. I agree with that goal. Too many people are kicking back because their food is taken care of.

As taxpaying citizens we need to demand that any able-bodied person receiving PUBLIC money should have their life choices and lifestyles subject to PUBLIC accountability. Right now we are simply incentivizing (paying) shiftless parasites to laze around and pump out more children that they can't support. The productive citizens who get up and go to work every day are TIRED of this shit!!!!!

I agree there are MANY people getting food stamps by lying, etc. People that are ripping off our country.

HOWEVER, there are also many elderly, disabled, and others that genuinely need help.

It's the families that are honestly struggling that will be hurt if their food stamps are cut. A father will get food by whatever means for his children. Let the people get hungry and chaos will erupt. It's not rocket science to know this. I'm sure TPTB know it....and FEMA/Homeland security is ready.

There are other places the government can make cuts. Even better screening would help greatly. But cutting back on the food in this manner is not the way. IMHO

Thanks. Interesting to say the least.

You know what I find hard to understand? Last summer...2012, you couldn't drive 20 miles without hearing a commercial actively promoting food stamps.

It went something like, "Did you know that you can earn up to XXXXX (forget the amount, but it was significant) and still qualify for food assistance? Currently there are XXXX (another significant number) people who are eligible, but not applying for food assistance. Did you also know that you can earn up to XXXXX (a surprisingly large amount) your children can qualify for free school breakfast/lunch? We encourage everyone to apply for this free assistance. You can contact XXXXX (dept.) or call xxxxxx (phone number)"

It went on all summer. Now, they're cutting. Anyone else think that's odd?

 Quoting: AA 47096534

Are you stupid? I live in Houston, a sanctuary city thanks to the liberal democratic fucks that have been mayor since about 2002-2003. The illegal criminal invaders show up and get jobs that US citizens used to do like construction. US citizens used to be able to support a family without the help of the dole on a construction income but since all the illegal criminal invaders showed up they have repressed wages since they work for shit. To make up the difference between their shit wages and what it costs to live here they get on the dole. Yes illegal criminal invaders get dole money and the easiest way is to shit out an anchor. They also get free medical care thanks to the bullshit law that hospitals can't turn anyone away. You can thank that neotard ass clown Reagan for that shit. It needs to be repealed. Before it (the 1980s) people were not dying in the street. They just took their broke ass to the county hospital rather than getting to use the same facilities that people who have private insurance or are paying their pay use. I have a real problem with leeches getting to us the same facilities I use when I have private insurance with a copay and deductible. They need to all take their ass to the county hospital where they belong and illegal criminal invaders should not even be allowed treatment at the county hospitals. They deserve to die in the fucking streets.

Anyway, the illegal criminal invaders are not doing the jobs US citizens refuse to do. That is bullshit. Here is how it works. US employers now refuse to hire US citizens for certain jobs (like construction) because they can skirt the law by hiring illegals. Employers can pay them shit wages since they don't "exist" and employment wage laws don't apply to people who don't exist. Employers can also skirt the IRS but not filing anything on their illegal criminal invader low life employees since they don't "exist" in the system. When you hire US citizens they have a social security number and when you don't file on them or lie on what you do file you are getting into criminal charges territory. Get it now? Illegal criminal alien invaders may get a job but they still need the "free" shit to make it here. They are nothing but a bunch of suck ass leeching locusts.

Fix the Public's economy and the Food Stamp issue will take care of itself.

Congress should not be cutting food stamps at this point, instead Congress should be fighting Wall St, for Wall St stock companies to start hiring more and more people... Wall St Banker's need to start freeing up all that Banker;s Stimulus Funds and put it all into circulation around the entire nation and among wider and wider numbers of people in the USA.

Fix the damned economy and leave Food Stamp issue alone and for another day when the economy is so sound and runnign that only 10 Million have to be on food stamp...

Yes, if you are not young, and if you are over 55 years old, you are pretty much done being 'free'... your poverty will only be increasing from this day forward.. in part its natural, but who needs a government that cares more about endless wars it itself has created than the people it is supposed to be defending, all the people of the USA.

But what you point out doesn't exist in the minds of those who choose not to see beyond the dollars coming out of their own pocket each payday. They only see that those dam lazy welfare bums are fed with their money personally and eat better than they do dammit. They don't care about what would occur long term cutting off social welfare programs or even stopping paying taxes all together. Just stop taking any of their money at all who cares if it creates a situation ten times worse it's their money.

Food stamp president: Enrollment up 70 percent under Obama

Enrollment in the food stamp program — officially the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program — has soared by 70 percent in the years since President Obama first took office, a new report finds.

The government said the recession ended in 2009, The Wall Street Journal reports, but enrollment in the food stamp program didn’t wane, as would be expected in an improving economy. Since 2008, it’s been on a steady rise, The Journal reports.

A record 47.8 million people participate in the program, as of December 2012 — a figure that translates into a 70 percent rise since 2008, The Journal says. Why?

I guess your first sentence threw me off. I think the families affected by this will be the long term users, right? They are the ones who should be forced to find another source of food. No you don't understand..congress will stop gub function, don't you think that affect us all..? I am talking of the way they use to make their point, it doesn't solve anything, they don't bring anything new to the table.
