Re: I need a list of good doom/shtf movies..
The Last Days is an unusual film about severe crippling agoraphobia. Parts of it were pretty good.

People acquire this, possibly for unknown reasons, as a result of a need for technology instead of real life, as a disease, etc.

I may be the only person who like Knowing. It's a 2009 film about a person who receives a coded message about many deaths from accidents. Alien beings of most likely extraterrestrial origin come but only to save some special children. I'm not in the benevolent space brothers camp as I know too much world history to know what happens when a technologically advances species meets those without it.

The absolutely lovely Aussie Rose Byrne is in the film, which for that reason alone I would watch it.

I would say that Children of Men was a stunning cinematic achievement, that it will be talked about for years. It is a very realistic view of a very dystopic Orwelian world in which immigrants flood a safer zone, live on the fringes, there's ongoing terrorsim, mass sterility (this is very possible from toxins and anyone can look at the drop off of viable sperm in postmodern men to see this happening).

It's difficult to explain why the original Red Dawn was so important. I think chiefly the idea of Communism was so intense at the time it was filmed, the fear of an invasion from a Latin American route was highly plausible, the idea of young people managing to avoid being picked up (highly unlikely today since they lack practical survival skills), etc.

That old version had heart. You felt them struggling.

There was an American tv miniseries in the early 80s called Amerika. It is all but impossible to find, but an extraordinary show in which America falls to communism and how people deal with coping with the loss of property as well as political prisoners. It was chilling when it came out.

How did no one post "The Road"?
 Quoting: Barrack Hussein Obama

Because it's depressing. I saw it but I won't watch it again and I never recommend it.

He says, "Doom movie is depressing." AHHHAHHAHahahahhah..

It's a great movie. Realism is the truth. You probably like the stupid-ass boom-stick movie for vapid simpletons:

Re: I need a list of good doom/shtf movies..
When I was a kid back in the 70s I saw this trippy British film called "No Blade of Grass." This scientist dude and his family along with others bug out of London due to a pandemic and try to head to his brother's farm in Scotland. Along the way there is all sorts of crazy stuff happening including gang rape of some of the chicks in the entourage by a motorcycle gang. The actress who plays Pauline Fowler on Eastenders, Wendy Richard, was in this and she had black hair and her character was a real floozy, so much so that one of the men tells her that she has "a survival kit between her legs!" Along the way a lady gives birth and they leave her, the baby and her husband behind at some shack as they would slow them down. When they get to the farm they end up in a shootout with the brother who didn't want to let the non-family members of the party in. Wish I could see this again as an adult, it sure freaked me out as a little kid!

Yes, the second version (1978) of The Invasion of the Body Snatchers was actually the best version.

Sleep deprivation was part of the equation, for that's when the duplication happened. Imagine being afraid to sleep and increasing paranoia. Great film.

I really enjoyed the more recent Day of the Triffids made by the BBC. I think they head to the Isle of Wight to escape them.

Re: I need a list of good doom/shtf movies..

On the Beach (1959)
A great post-nuclear film that suffers from a terrible soundtrack. The crew of a US submarine head to Australia. Because of the air currents, it's the last place on Earth to survive the nuclear attack. It's slow death, but they make a life for a little while.

The Handmaid's Tale (1990)

An ecological disaster and civil war destroys the USA. very few women are still fertile. When the wealthy class cannot have a child, then a woman is forced to serve as a handmaid and bear the couple a new child.

Other women are forced into prostitution to the wealthy despite it being a massive theocracy.

Carriers (2009)

A pandemic becomes widespread, and two young couples take off on an adventure, not realizing the seriousness of a collapse.

Blade Runner (1982)
Extraordinary visionary film from Ridley Scott before he was famous. A dystopian future in which widespread pollution has destroyed much of the world. Space travel has become common, and most of those healthy enough have left to colonize other worlds. Because of the difficulties of life in space, special androids with enhanced strength, high intellect, and dexterity, are used to perform dangerous tasks and serves as slaves.

Some of the replicants escape and return to Earth in search of answers.

Often considered one of the top 20 science fiction films of all time.

The Stand miniseries

Stephen King novels or short stories are hit-or-miss when presented on tv or film. They did a fair job of this massive novel.

A pandemic kills everyone and the Walking Dude, perhaps the Antichrist, is gathering people while another person Mother Abigail are gathering folks to her side.

Great performance by Gary Sinise and strangely enough by Molly Ringwald.

You should read the book. The year it came out, we were all reading it, and when someone sneezed, we would laugh nervously.

Re: I need a list of good doom/shtf movies..
Testament (1983)

A small town deals with a worldwide nuclear attack. You see them slowly dying, some less immune to the radiation than others, often the children dying.

There's an extremely poignant scene of a very young Kevin Cosner looking for something to bury his infant son in. It makes me shudder to remember it.

Some young children make some remarkably mature performances. An adolescent realizes she'll never marry or meet someone and fall in love. A young teen boy spends a lot of his time running errands and trying to help his family and his elderly neighbors.

An excellent drama all around.

Harrison Bergeron (1995)

An intellectual film based upon the Vonnegutt 1961 short story. In this dystopian world, those who excel are forced to handicap themselves in order to create the facade of equality. One rebels and is labeled a terrorist. Hard to say enough good things about it. Few people saw it.

Re: I need a list of good doom/shtf movies..
A Scanner Darkly (2006)

A film made and then frame by frame painstakingly animated. Stunning achievement. Predicts a dystopian Orwellian police state of constant surveillance.

1984 (1984)
Based upon the George Orwell novel, a police state with complete surveillance, thought control, brutalizes the protagonist and the woman he's having an affair with.

War of the Worlds (2005)

An alien invasion results in massive citizen migration to safe zones, but few manage to make it. The story mostly follows one family's struggle especially in light of a protagonist of few survival skills and surly teenagers who absolutely will not listen. Highly realistic instead of the benevolent space brothers films.

Unfortunately almost everyone knows how it ends which spoils this modern retelling.

Monsters (2010)

A space probe is contaminated as it returns to Earth. The organisms on it begin multiplying in stages in Latin America and Mexico. A wall is built to control the spread of them, but the phenomena is new and the military is not in control of the situation.

We follow a freelance photographer in Mexico who's been tasked to both document the alien life forms as well as to get the daughter of his boss back to the USA.

This is a very fine independent film and demonstrates how great a film can be without huge budgets.

A Boy and His Dog (1975)

Very weird cult scifi film starring Don Johnson way before he was famous. A young man and his telepathic dog travel the post-apocalyptic world and try to simply survive from day-to-day. You have to see this one to appreciate it.

In a post-apocalyptic world.......where the russians nuked us...the capital was moved to Vegas and Elvis was declared King.....

The King is now dead....and guitar playing, sword slinging warriors are coming from all over to battle to be the new King.

Very Campy....but enjoyable and has a cult following.

Here are four more from my list that I've seen and def recommend:

Contagion
The Thing (2011 remake)
I Am Legend (real good with Will Smith)
Quarantine (part 1)

And contrary to remarks made by others on your thread, MY list is my own personal list of movies I've watched. I don't get my lists "off the net"; mine was given to me over a year ago as a list of suggested doom/alien/outbreak/horror flicks to watch since those are the type movies I prefer to watch.

I have MANY MORE on my list but many are horror flicks and not much end-of-the-world-doom so I had to search through it to pick out the ones you wanted to see.
