Juan in a Million

I don't know if this is good or not, but it's on my list on highly anticipated films. The concept is great. Did he dimensionally shift out of reality?

The Langoliers

This is a Stephen King novella made into a tv movie. I really enjoyed reading it. It made for a decent film.

The Brotherhood of the Bell (1970)

A good old conspiracy film which almost no one has seen, the Brotherhood of the Bell is about the secret cabal that runs the world aka fill-in-the-blank acroymns like the the Council for Foreign Relations, Skull & Bones, Bohemian Grove, etc

It's hard to believe the elite allowed it to be made into a film considering it was created in 1970.

Reign of Fire

The dragons are awakened and lay waste to whole cities. Only a few survive and call themselves firefighters and attempt to oppose them. Christian Bale stars. A pretty good if very silly film.

Most of the smaller known films have been named.

There's an independent film made in the last ten years. It's about a city that's been hit by nuclear fallout. A guy seals his house up to keep the radioactive dust out, then he has to deal with some good neighbors or even family members trapped outside and the moral quandary of what to do. It was really great but I can't recall the name. Maybe someone else will remember it?

I remember scenes where the folks outside are contaminated with dust, and maybe he let's them inside, but segregates them into a different comparmentalized section of the house.

Special Bulletin (1983)

A creative idea about a terrorist atomic bombing, maybe a dirty bomb, and how the journalist would report on it as it happens.

You can find it easily online, but to stay within the rules:

Last Night (1998)

The certain end of humanity culminates in a final night and how a few people spend it.

Fail Safe (2000)

An excellent remake about the military response to a nuclear threat, and the point of no return when orders cannot be rescinded.

Re: I need a list of good doom/shtf movies..
When I was a kid back in the 70s I saw this trippy British film called "No Blade of Grass." This scientist dude and his family along with others bug out of London due to a pandemic and try to head to his brother's farm in Scotland. Along the way there is all sorts of crazy stuff happening including gang rape of some of the chicks in the entourage by a motorcycle gang. The actress who plays Pauline Fowler on Eastenders, Wendy Richard, was in this and she had black hair and her character was a real floozy, so much so that one of the men tells her that she has "a survival kit between her legs!" Along the way a lady gives birth and they leave her, the baby and her husband behind at some shack as they would slow them down. When they get to the farm they end up in a shootout with the brother who didn't want to let the non-family members of the party in. Wish I could see this again as an adult, it sure freaked me out as a little kid!

I've watched it! Highly recommended. Disturbing and frightening--especially considering what is happening in the world today

Yeah. If you're a parent, Testament is a really rough film to sit through. In many ways it is highly realistic with the issues with burials, trying to radio communicate with other survivors to see how they are coping...what they are doing. The grind of day to day living post-collapse. The issues for pregnant mothers. It was well done.

A lot of people discount old films. While they often have cheesy elements and seemed dated by the acting or technical standards, a lot of them have heart, while a lot of recent dramas seem entirely made for the commercial aspects of making a buck.

I could completely see a small town having a community meeting and trying to figure out creatively what to do, discussing the issues, the frustrations erupting, the paranoia, some not cooperating, selfishness, etc.

Here's that excellent independent film about a family dealing with nuclear fallout...

Right At Your Door (2007)

[link to en.wikipedia.org]

"Right at Your Door is a 2006 American thriller film about a couple and follows the events surrounding them when multiple dirty bombs detonate in Los Angeles."

It seemed very realistic, good performances, there's a real intensity about the film, reasonable soundtrack, etc. I think some people were overly critical of the film. It's not an action flick. It's not a big Hollywood film. It doesn't have major special effects. It does however capture the likely struggle of someone coping with a dirty bomb.

Because of advances in filmmaking software and youtube, a lot of filmmakers on tiny budgets have gotten together with their friends and family to make independent films. A cursory check at youtube under post-apocalyptic drama will turn up lots of hits. Many are made as "shorts" with the hope that there's enough interest generated to make them into full fledged films at some point.

The film "Sling Blade" was originally made in this fashion. It began with Billy Bob Thornton literally calling people up for donations after making a short.
...

If you want to see a doom movie about the real nature of the world in our corporation controlled world, and are not afraid of waking up, then I would watch The East.

The world we live in is not depicted in most mediums like tv or film. We're enslaved and we don't know it.

Just finished watching the Mist (2007)

I remember not finishing it the first time, because they changed the ending from the novella. Look back through the Stephen King book Skeleton Crew to read it.

Anyway, wow, what a rough ending.

On the positive side, it's fun and it's also a little prequel for the Walking Dead since the director, Frank Darabont used to be one of the main directors for The Walking Dead.

On the negative side, well...sometimes the book is good enough. Note that The Shawkshank Redemption (also Stephen King and also the same director) is left unscathed and ends up just fine.

While I'm definitely not in the global warming crowd (we have more Arctic Ice now then ever before and climatologists intentionally obscured the data to make it worse than it was), this film is truly a creepy doom movie.

The Last Winter (2006)

A group of oil workers (and the attached climatologist) began to notice odd events at their remote location. One by one, they either begin wigging out from "stress" or some strange phenomena is affecting them directly.

Highly recommended. Don't piss off Mother Nature.

Both of the Village of the Damned films were enjoyable. An odd event occurs in which time stops and people fall into immediate sleep. When they awaken, the women are all pregnant and give birth to similar blond children, all with enhanced mental awareness, and who can think with a Hive mind.

Village of the Damned (1960)

Village of the Damned (1995)

A funny is silly alien invasion film is Battle Lose Angeles (2011). Much of the film is about a squad of Marines trying to deal with some aliens. That part is very fun like the Alien 2 film.

I second this movie, it is hugely underrated as shtf movies go, and it's a very good film. I've seen lots of these types of movies, and this one really stuck with me. So much of the movie is really about the behavioral changes people undergo when under stress, and how this can present itself as an even greater danger than the situation that brought about the shtf in the first place. I can't recommend this movie enough as far as shtf movies go.

You convinced me to watch Take Shelter, even though it's not popular with a lot of preppers due to how it turns out. Still Some of the actors are sure getting noticed (two from Boardwalk Empire) and Jessica Chastain has been in lots of famous movies now.

Don't be mad at the ending. It's likely to upset a lot of GLP folks.
