Re: Russian War Games on Baltic Border Spark Security Fears
Baltic officials said regional security had been weakened as Russia led military exercises on their doorstep involving almost 12,000 troops.

A week of land and sea maneuvers dubbed “Zapad 2013,” or “West 2013,” began today as part of biennial exercises with Belarus, Russia’s Defense Ministry said on its website. Troops in both nations tested coordination in destroying “illegal armed formations,” it said.

Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, which regained independence in 1991 after half a century of Soviet rule, joined the North Atlantic Treaty Organization in 2004 amid Russian opposition. NATO has held exercises in the Baltic region since 2010, while Russia has opened new military bases and deployed more troops on its western border in recent years, according to the defense ministers of Estonia and Latvia.

While Russia calls today’s maneuvers an anti-terrorism exercise, they suggest an escalation “into a conflict with NATO member countries,” Estonian Defense Minister Urmas Reinsalu said yesterday. “An exercise of this nature is certainly negatively affecting the security environment in the region.”

Actually last USSR leader Gorbachev (fucking moron, scum of the earth) had an agreement with Western leaders- USSR gives up Berlin Wall, and NATO do not expand Eastern.
So what? Baltic states becomes part of the NATO. They just don`t understand- in case of war drums they will be destroyed in 5 minuts, first of all.
Finland has giant border with Russia- but not scared, and didn`t become a part of NATO alliance. And this little nazi-obsessed states just doing everything to enjoy Rockefellers.

 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 47166428

Don't be a fool. Russia fears the USA just like the USA fears Russia. Both can destroy each other. Both will destroy each other if there is ever a war which is why there will never be one. Russia and the USA will continue to fight each other through proxy wars like Syria.

Russia and USA aren't so different though. Their interests align in many places and this will only grow in time. The main reason the USA opposed the USSR is because of communism and control over energy.

Well communism is gone for the most part and energy is becoming less of an issue and both the USA and Russia have discovered more energy.

In the future it's more likely the USA and Russia will be allies then enemies. Russia and the USA share a common enemy with Islam. With the rise of China, Russia is threatened. China will compete for influence in central Asia which threatens Russia. China will eventually want to expand and guess whats directly to the north of them? Resource rich Russian lands that are almost empty. In fact the Chinese have already started the invasion. More and more Chinese immigrants move (legally and illegally) to Siberia everyday.

Russian assessments from 1997 suggested that China, not the United States, posed the greatest threat to Russia’s interests and allies. Indeed, leading Russian scholars of international relations such as Alexei Arbatov predicted that over the next five to 20 years, Russia should carefully watch China’s expansionism toward Siberia and the Russian Far East, as well as Central Asia … _thediplomat

“[Russians are] still worried that China will invade Siberia one day because of the resources,” Dmitry Gorenburg, a senior analyst at military and public sector think tank CNA, said in an interview last month.

“Because from the Russian point of view it’s a very sparsely populated area, hard to defend, very remote from the center of Russia,” he said. _Taipei Times

NATO is also getting weaker. The USA bears the lions share of the burden and the Europeans depend on the USA more and more. Most of our "allies" would have trouble defending their own lands let alone helping in a major war. Even the large powers like the UK barely have enough ships to patrol their own coast.

Over the next decade or so it makes sense for a new major alliance for form based around the USA, Russia, UK, Germany, France, and India to arise. All countries share a common enemy in Islam and are threatened by a large China.
Ayatollah Khomeini:
“Islam makes it incumbent on all adult males, provided they are not disabled and incapacitated, to prepare themselves for the conquest of [other] countries so that the writ of Islam is obeyed in every country in the world. But those who study Islamic Holy War will understand why Islam wants to conquer the whole world…. Those who know nothing of Islam pretend that Islam counsels against war. Those [who say this] are witless. Islam says: Kill all the unbelievers just as they would kill you all! Does this mean that Muslims should sit back until they are devoured by [the unbelievers]? Islam says: Kill them [the non-Muslims], put them to the sword and scatter [their armies]. Does this mean sitting back until [non-Muslims] overcome us? Islam says: Kill in the service of Allah those who may want to kill you! Does this mean that we should surrender to the enemy? Islam says: Whatever good there is exists thanks to the sword and in the shadow of the sword! People cannot be made obedient except with the sword! The sword is the key to Paradise, which can be opened only for Holy Warriors! There are hundreds of other [Koranic] verses and Hadiths [sayings of the Prophet] urging Muslims to value war and to fight. Does all that mean that Islam is a religion that prevents men from waging war? I spit upon those foolish souls who make such a claim.”

NATO probably thinks Russia is testing out some new listening devices in anticipation of 'troubles' in other areas. Well, the Med Sea and Black Seas would have already been salted when the Israel listening devices were discovered. (unless you believe Israel would make the mike look like a natural rock and put a tv satellite sized dish right next to it, you would also buy that the US forgot to put air-cleaners on the choppers on that failed rescue attempt in 1980 was a true story))

Perhaps the forklift attachment would be an option you would be interested in? I was thinking more like from this 1st pic to the 2nd pic and up the cargo capacity to fit with a 100ft version. That would need ice 24/7 but it could also travel 24/7 without refueling and if the upper winds could be coaxed to come down you would also need a high-speed version

We should be on the thread that predicts the Thames will freeze, all year rather than just in the winter would be the exterminator, anything less would need us to make 'some adjustments'.

If land can be salted with cluster munitions, could salting the sea-floor have little devices that attach themselves to the various hull (visible and not so visible) and ride silently along until the hull is in a port and the tracker signal is given for the hypersonic missile that is the boat/port exterminator in a war that needs a clear victor. Perhaps the one that can accept the reality of weather change will be the one to have the clear upper-hand.

Too much pressure on small ice area makes it crack. That's the whole idea behind light "swimming on tires" design with possibility to both swim and crawl back on ice.
It should be possible to make it work with heavyweight stuff too. But it's something for the other thread.

There's not much one can do against all sorts of tracking. In course of large scale war tracking would be definitely disrupted in one way or another, opening gaps.

Nations do what is in their best interest. You don't have to think alike to share similar interests. Russia has also floated the idea of a Russian-American alliance in the past so this isn't some fantasy scenario.

And what does having war on ones soil have to do with anything involving an alliance?

If it becomes in both Americas and Russias interests to ally it will happen especially as the old cold war hardliners die out. The Russians and Americans didn't like each other much in WW2 yet they still worked together.

Over the next decade or so it makes sense for a new major alliance for form based around the USA, Russia, UK, Germany, France, and India to arise. All countries share a common enemy in Islam and are threatened by a large China.

Russian does not think like American. Sorry you are incorrect, their is no state of mind balance here. Different people so very different. Russians have war on their own soil for many century's , USA has had 1 in 1776 and learned nothing.

First of all communism is not gone. Energy problems and dependencies are not solved.

Lets not forget glorious Soviet alliance with Germany during WWII and lets not skip well known modern Russian-Chinese alliance. So as far as alliances go, they work all the time. Neverending wars in the country and at the borders too. It's definitely not an example to learn from.
