Anonymous Coward User ID: 46480848 Canada 09/21/2013 04:40 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Two hours of my time 90 bucks for new pads and rotors, saved 300.00 per what they quoted her at the tire shop. Quoting: Lur~king So here's to you Mr. ripoff tire changer. why finger to the tire changer? he is not the owner of the shop who quoted you 300. That guy is getting paid 20 dollars per hour max to do your brake job. I'm a mechanic and i'm tired of people talking shit about mechanics when it's the actual shop owner and managers that RIP YOU OFF. The mechanic just does the work |

I can't trust a single damn Michigan licensed mechanic to do the work that needs to be done. Have to find some off the book dude to get it done right or do it myself. |

I have about 7 years experience and in most shops I have been maybe 1 out of 10 were crooks which is not that bad of a ratio. The real crook is the guy who is selling you the work, quoting it as high as he can to make a good profit. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 42846652 Australia 09/21/2013 05:13 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Good work. I have been in the trade for 12 years and have worked in several workshops/mobile mechanical businesses. There are crooks or poorly trained/poor attitude mechanics out there. Some are outright dangerous without even knowing it. But as for ripping you off, did the car need brakes? Some of the tyre places I know of report brakes and bushes to drum up extra work, but have the owner doubting so they often came to me (mobile mechanic, at the time) for a second opinion. |

Mechanics aren't the ones you have to worry about.. it's the sales people. |

It would have been a net loss in revenue for me, inasmuch as it would have taken longer. Better to leave it to the experts IMHO. Now if her computer had broken, that's a whole different story... With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible |
Lur~king (OP) User ID: 46813308 United States 09/21/2013 10:48 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I can replace pads/shoes but I've never done rotors. I am in disbelief (not doubting you but I can't imagine) that $90 covered pads and rotors. That's what it cost my car for 4 (all disc) brakes alone 6 months ago. I did get the ceramic ones so they wouldn't show dust on my rims but it's not like I got Brembos (which was the other option and they were 2x the price, I think). Quoting: Anonymous Coward 16577681 I just did the front but yes that is what the shoe's and rotors cost at autozone. |

Lur~king (OP) User ID: 46813308 United States 09/21/2013 10:53 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | My whole point with the thread was that the big name shops like here were we live commercial tire or les shwab always always always rip people off, I realize front disc brakes are an easy task....in fact I would think most women could do a brake job if they wanted to. Anonymous Coward User ID: 47029795 United States 09/21/2013 10:57 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | good job on making sure your daughter has a safe car by the way. drums in back? takes a lot longer before the drums go. all the weight shifts to the front of a car and most of the braking power is in the front. whether discs in back or drums, plan on checking them every other time you do the fronts or something. i just finally did the back on our car and it had over a hundred k on it. |
