Don't project your western feminist hangups and Dark Ages attitude toward sex onto the women in these countries. Asians have a much different attitude toward sex than westerners, seeing it as a normal bodily function that is a need by men much like hunger.

Many of these girls make enough money to support their families, build them homes, buy them farms and equipment, and send the younger ones to college, things they couldn't have dreamed of otherwise. While they understand that sex work isn't mankind's highest calling, they balance that with the good they are able to do for their families, a balance that is overwhelmingly positive in their lives.

IME Asians are far less judgmental about age than westerners; in fact they respect age as a mark of experience. They also don't mind as much if you carry a bit of weight, seeing it as you having enough money to afford to eat well, i.e. as a sign of wealth.

They won't care as much about what you have in the US as what you spend while you're in Asia. If you're a tightwad here, you're going to be a tightwad back home if they go with you.

In Asia, what is prized is manners, especially the ability to handle conflict calmly. If you've taken the time to give yourself some background on the culture you're visiting, try the food, learn a few words of the local language, show the proper respect for your host country, and laugh off the annoyances of living in an alien culture, you'll go far.

Thanks for the advice. I've always liked Chinese and Thai cultures, though learning tonal languages has been quite hard. I'm really bad at Chinese, and haven't tried Thai yet. Age doesn't help on that front, though manners and respect come easily. I've visited China and would like to take a long trip spanning both countries, and perhaps others. There is the matter of short term visas and an unstable world, but life is to be lived, not avoided. I wonder if older folks would be accepted for teaching jobs?

Yep, tonal languages are very difficult. Coupled with the sounds in Thai we don't have in English, the strange alphabet (that is phonetic but has more characters than ours), and the totally different grammar (NO verb conjugation, NO tenses), and it can be a nightmare.

If you're traveling on a US passport you don't need a visa to stay here for up to 30 days. If you're planning a longer visit get a tourist visa in the US before leaving, and MAKE SURE YOU KNOW THE RULES.

BTW, Chinese visas have gotten harder to get lately too, because of a crackdown on foreigners abusing them. Definitely apply for that one in the US or whatever your home country.

As far as English teachers, age isn't a factor that I know of. You can investigate that while you're here, or google for "TEFL Thailand" for more info.

Note that English teachers aren't paid well here, and many Thais see it as a scam to get a long-term visa. The guys who do better hook up with companies that offer English classes to companies, and tutor individuals such as the children of rich Thai folks.

If staying in Thailand long-term is the point of the teaching gig, and you qualify, you're better off getting a retirement visa. They are relatively easy to qualify for, check the Thai embassy website for details.
