Why do Americans say "vajayjay" instead of vagina???

I understand when it's said around children for obvious reasons, but when adult people start speaking "vajayjay" among themselves, that sounds quite stupid to say the least.

Guess it really comes down to who you are talking to and in what context. Maybe it's a cultural thing but as a whole, I don't think the proper medical term for male or female reproductive parts are used, if at all, unless in a medical environment.

Actually it orginally appeared on scrubs. The blonde doctor said it. Scrubs is a sitcom about resident doctors.
