How about the physicalness (is that a word?)of the bed.

Me and the wife spent plenty on a new bed that I can't sleep on.

I mean I've slept on plenty of beds, but cant sleep on it!

Re: Is Your Bed Making You Sick???
I was tempted to get a memory foam mattress a few years ago but a former colleague and close friend who also happens to be a gay slut told me it's difficult to get busy on... since my partner is older (pushing 50, gah), and I'm not exactly getting any younger either, I went for a nice firm pillow top I liked in the store instead.

Honestly I spend at least a couple nights a week on my couch just because it's so damn comfortable. Not a shameless plug, I swear, but I could sleep on this thing for the rest of my life and be happy: [link to www.lovesac.com] I think the cushions have some kind of foam core, not sure if I'm inhaling the same crap nightly but do know I tend to sleep better splayed out on the couch than I do in bed, as much as I like my mattress.

OP I use a latex foam pillow. Those probably don't have the same chemicals, right?
Quoting: Anonymous Coward 41474223

From what I've been reading, they are not good for you either.

>>>However, there are a lot of speculations about the danger these pillows pose to human health. Although they are labeled to be hypoallergenic, a number of people have been claiming to have gotten sick since they have acquired of these pillows.

Latex pillows are made of rubber foam produced by sap from rubber trees. They are resistant to dust mites and mildew by nature. However, synthetic latex can outgas chemicals that may affect the human health. These pillows are of materials formulated from petroleum products.<<<

Re: Is Your Bed Making You Sick???
Does that include the temperpedic bed?
Quoting: nah

>>>Tempurpedic’s commercials and website scream natural, fresh and there’s nothing natural about a Tempurpedic mattress. Tempur material, like all other memory foams are made with petroleum. I guess that’s natural…it’s a natural resource, right?

Common complaints with Tempur mattresses include headaches, eye irritation, heat build-up, strong chemical odors / fumes / off gassing.<<<

There are some interesting comments regarding those mattresses at the above link.

That's not the issue for a lot of people. I'm sleeping 6-7 hours a night and waking up tired and going through the entire day tired. I started the other thread about constant fatigue and I haven't come up with any answers yet but if I can sleep in another location for a few nights, I'd like to see what happens.

I have one of those inflatable air mattresses. It does smell like nylon, i.e. like a beach ball. I'm wondering how safe that is. Just put it on the floor with no metal bedframe or coil-spring mattress under me. Hmmmmm.....

I definitely can't sleep in hotels, there is so much artificial, synthetic material in the rooms between the beds, pillows, rugs, etc. Some hotels I've woken up with swollen, red, itchy eyes! I know they use very strong cleaning detergents to get rid of all the crud people leave on the bedding! (ugh)

Give the air mattress a try. I would put a lot of cotton sheets and a comforter over the air mattress. When I go camping and sleep on an air mattress I've always slept like a baby. I figured it was because of the fresh air, but now I'm wondering if it had something to do with not sleeping on a toxic bed.

Feathers ripped from birds' backs and gaping wounds sewn up with no pain relief: The barbaric cost of your winter coat
By Steve Boggan
PUBLISHED: 18:02 EST, 28 November 2012 | UPDATED: 10:39 EST, 30 November 2012

...For many of the birds, the agony has to be endured more than once.

Grey geese, which are bred for foie gras, are plucked once or twice before being slaughtered at 12 weeks old; white geese, bred for meat, are plucked up to three times before being slaughtered at around 26 weeks.

Marcus says: 'The men and women from the brigades work without feeling, grabbing terrified geese by their wings or legs, sometimes breaking them, always hurting them, as they tear out the birds’ feathers.

'When it’s over and the birds are bleeding, the wounds are roughly sewn up with a needle and thread without any anaesthetic.

'When their feathers grow back after about five weeks, it happens all over again — and all so you can have a nice winter coat.'

The plucking brigades usually harvest around 150 grams of down per goose — enough to fill an average-sized pillow. Three or four birds are needed to fill a coat. ...
Quoting: Anonymous Coward 32287902

The down comes from China now, and even if it wasn't so ugly how they get it, I would suspect the contamination that might be there. I was looking for a down comforter a few years ago and could not find one that did not have Chinese down/feathers. I ended up passing on it after reading that, I am glad I did.

Last time I slept on an air mattress was out camping, it gave out in the middle of the night, raining, muddy outside and cooollllldddd hard ground inside the tent. I laid there half the night on a root and a stone, and thought, never again. And so far I have been right.

Re: Is Your Bed Making You Sick???
Mine was!!

I have a memory foam mattress topper on my bed and I’m sure many of you have one too. The bedding industry has been touting memory foam like it’s the greatest invention since pillows. After sleeping on the foam for the past year, it started getting lumpy and uncomfortable. I went on a search to find out if I needed to flip the thing over, take it off the bed so it could get it’s memory back, or did I need to replace it. What I found out was, I need to throw it away and NEVER put that stuff on my bed again. And here’s why..

Toxic nightmare: Is your bed making you seriously sick?
>>>Dr. Bolte explained that memory foam is a resin made with chemicals such as Toluene Diisocyanate, described in this one Environmental Protection Administration as being extremely toxic if inhaled. That's exactly what Dr Bolte says Paese did every night, eight hours at a time, for years, breathing in the gasses given off by the memory foam.
"It's known documented research that any of the chemicals used to make memory foam have side effects...from carcinogenicity and allergies. There are a lot of toxicities," Bolte said.<<<
[link to www.kens5.com]

Another interesting article with a lot of reader comments.
[link to www.chem-tox.com]

Dangers of Memory Foam Mattresses
>>While sleeping on a memory foam mattress night after night, a person is close to the concentrated petroleum chemical fumes and flame-retardant fumes that emit from the foam. After inhaling the fumes, which build up in their systems over time, some people experience headaches, joint pains, nausea and excessive sweating.<<
[link to www.ehow.com]

For months, I’ve had a difficult time sleeping and have been waking up in the morning with a dull headache. Since I don’t ever get headaches, I was starting to wonder if I had a brain tumor. (LOL) After doing research on memory foam, I took the foam off my bed, put my mattress on the floor and have been sleeping great and feeling wonderful ever since.

Why did I put the mattress on the floor? That subject is worthy of its own thread but…

Your Mattress Could be Acting as a Cancer-Causing Radiation Antenna
>>>According to Scientific American: "... [A] 2007 study in Sweden conducted between 1989 and 1993 ... revealed a strong link between the incidence of melanoma and the number of FM and TV transmission towers covering the area where the individuals lived.
Consider, however, that even a TV set cannot respond to broadcast transmissions unless the weak electromagnetic waves are captured and amplified by an appropriately designed antenna. Antennas are simply metal objects of appropriate length sized to match the wavelength of a specific frequency of electromagnetic radiation."
In the U.S., bed frames and box springs are made of metal, and the length of a bed is exactly half the wavelength of FM and TV transmissions. . <<<
[link to articles.mercola.com]

So if any of y’all are waking up tired, suffering from headaches, etc. you might want to test to see if your bed is causing the problem.
Quoting: Anonymous Coward 46146414

I spent big bucks on a temperpedic to help my tossing, turning and back pain filled night. It smelled for about three days and that was all. I've been fairly happy with it except in the middle of the summer. Those things sleep hot and I wish I had purchased a firmer temperpedic than I chose. After a few hours, I'm looking for a firmer cooler spot on the bed. Maddening. It does sleep like a cloud and doesn't lose it's shape. So, I'm going to have to live with it, chemicals or not. It has at least two covers on it, one of them a very good waterproof mattress pad. So I think I'm safe. Also it's on a wood frame, so not a electro wave catcher.

I've got an old regular coil-spring mattress on a wooden frame. The pillow I use is old and it's kind of lumpy -- I can smack it into submission so that it fits my head/neck perfectly. Plain cotton sheets and an old quilt. I sleep like a rock and wake up feeling great.

This. Old sheets, old pillow cases, old bedding on an old foam mattress. Old feather pillows that you can whack into shape. My old bod just does not like newer materials, the newer the material, the more my body rebels.

So much stuff comes out of China, and you never know what is really in it. I read a year or two ago about some people were having allergies and severe reactions and they traced it to new couches and chairs that had been shipped in containers with a toxic chemical that they had absorbed. Another one was that the furniture was literally sprinkled with an insecticide powder to kill vermin in the containers, and of course the new owners also bought the insecticide.

The cotton fabric from China is often made of cotton fiber mixed with recycled fabric fiber. The fabrics are picked apart by rag pickers in labor camps, and the thread mixed with good thread. But the fabric can come from hospitals or industrial rags and it gets into the fabric we buy here. So I look for old sheets at garage sales and buy them. A good washing, hang them out in the sun and they are good to go.

Do the spank test. No joke. open your windows and let the sun beams shine in, spank your bed when it has no blankets or sheets on. Do you see a cloud of dust rise from it?

All that would prove is that your bed is dirty. Humans shed alot of dead skin cells. Goes right through the sheets. Dust settles there too.
