This is great stuff! Well up to the usual GLP standard!!!

Are you guys going to discuss the Electric Universe Theory next? Is it worth hanging about, if only for entertainment value?

I am out of time, but will check in later. If you are incorporating A____M data then I suspect any effect the "outer planets" may have on terrestrial weather is secondary or indirect.

Completely agree, in fact it is the indirect effect we have been focusing on. As I said I am skeptical, but am reserving judgement. Inner planets may be more promising...

In regards to terrestrial weather, it is my understanding that in terms of extraterrestrial factors solar activity probably has the biggest influence. I just don’t see any mechanism for the “other planets” to directly affect our weather. Now this begs the question; can the gravitational effects of the planets affect solar activity? If I am honest, I would have to say I don’t know, but I think it to be plausible. That being said, my guess is this effect would have to be negligible if it exists at all.

Obviously the mass of the planets does exert some gravitational pull upon the sun and I did find that there are really only 5 planets that have this influence. If broken down to a percentage of total influence it looks like this:

Jupiter 73%
Venus 10%
Saturn 7%
Earth 6%
Mercury 3%

To summarize my thoughts, we are talking about a theoretical influence upon the sun that if it exists is probably negligible and impossible to quantify. So I can’t imagine how one would then apply this hypothetical effect on solar activity to terrestrial weather, a relationship we hardly understand to begin with. So I am skeptical to say the least.

Now if you agree that the above is tenuous, then I would think that one would also have to admit that the accurate prediction of a Carrington-type event would be equally as dubious. I just cannot fathom that there are a “group” of university scholars who believe such a prediction possible.

I know you mentioned some papers. I would still be interested in reading them.

Ok had to be careful asking to many questions, but managed to get some reading homework!
Please have a read and give me your opinions!

I'm out tonight but will look in on glp later, wont be able to make a start on them myself until tomorrow.

PS asked what my official job title is, apparently it is "Steve" but I can call myself a Harmonic Astrophysicist or what ever I want. I chose god, they still called me steve.

Reading list:

Dirk Callebaut: The influence of planetary attractions on the solar tachocline

Nicola Scaffeta: Harmonic model for solar and climate cyclical variation throughout the Holocene based on Jupiter–Saturn tidal frequencies plus the 11-year solar dynamo cycle

Nicola Scaffeta: Evidences for a planetary modulation of total solar irradiance and the TSI signature of the 1.09-year Earth-Jupiter conjunction cycle

Nicola Scaffeta: Testing an astronomically based decadal-scale empirical harmonic climate model versus the IPCC general circulation climate models

Haigh: Solar Terrestrial Interactions

Mordvinov and Willson: Effect of Large-Scale Magnetic Fields on Total Solar Irradiance

Thanks for the suggested reading. I skimmed over some of these papers and they do indeed seem to substantiate some of your earlier statements, so cheers to that. Harmonics also seem to be involved, however I need to read further, as I don’t fully understand how this term is being defined in regards to this work. At quick glance, it seems my previous assumption was correct (regarding harmonics) in that they are referencing the positions of the planets.

I’ll read a couple over the weekend and post my thoughts. <laughing> The plot thickens…….

OK, this paper is pretty interesting. The data “may” show that there is some relationship between TSI and the Earth-Jupiter conjunction cycle. I’m not convinced, but still interesting.

Out of curiosity, I plotted the orbits of the planets for May of 2014 and there is no Jupiter - Earth conjunction for that month. Actually, I found nothing “harmonically” <giggle> interesting at all. The date I would think might be worthy of note is January 5th, 2014.

Go here: [link to www.solarsystemscope.com]

And input January 5th, 2014. That is the next conjunction and it may be around solar maximum. Additionally, you have Venus in the mix as well.

Note: I wanted to input the date of September 1st 1859 out of curiosity, but it only went back to 1900. I can do it on my home computer, but I am at work. So Dr. Astro or Reality420, if you read this and have a simulator handy, please plot that date just for shits and grins…….

OK, after running the simulator for the date of September 1st, 1859 (The Carrington Event) I have established that there was not a Jupiter-Earth conjunction. That being said, I was surprised to see that there was a rare alignment of planets on that date. Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars and Saturn were in almost perfect alignment on the day of that solar storm. Please note that Jupiter accounts for about 73% of the gravitational influence on our sun and it was not part of this alignment. However, I had to laugh when I found that 4 of the 5 planets that have the most gravitational influence on the sun happened to be in alignment on that date.

An interesting coincidence.

Now I haven't heard them talking about the event with relation to planetary alignment, only cycles. But the fact that you have maximus and alignment happening at the same time, is a little worring....

I see the Harmonica Astrophyzzzycyst is with us again.

Have you determined your definition of "Harmonics" yet?

Well, while you're pondering that perhaps you, as an astrophyzzzycyst, could give us your opinion of this, from your blog which you keep spamming:

[link to cometison.blogspot.co.uk]
"How big is Ison?
...current estimate is about 5km (3 miles) in diameter."

and -

"What is Ison's mass?
We have estimated Ison to be 3,175,146,590 kg. This estimate was reached by a mean average (sic) of estimates from 11 BCRS members."

What would the consensus density of ISON be, based on the "mean average from 11 BCRS members."?
(snicker)

I am serious. What would ISON's density be based on the numbers quoted in your blog, Mr. Harmonica Astrophzzzycyst?
I assume the other 11 members of BCRS are also scientists?

So all 12 of you "scientists" came up with the density you will shortly reveal to us, within a very narrow range?

One other question -
Did all 12 of you go to the same school?

You did not understand.
That is your failing.
Setheory understood, he/she is intelligent.
You are obviously not.

I do not believe you understand what harmonics are, you questioned how they could have anything to do with planets???

You questioned why I would not put unpublished research details on an open forum. With this statement alone, you proved not just to me, but to glp that you are not part of the scientific community.

It's not my blog, but I do know a member and it is easy to understand. Personly I prefer waitingforison.wordpress.com

The figures are not my own and I do not know how they came to those, but I have no reason to doubt them. No I did not go to school with any one at that society (that I know of).

You still have not answered my question.

You insult me, call me a child, question my job.

My question to you again,

Who are you to question me, qualify yourself to judge me

I think you are a college drop out, probably living in mummy's basement, living off her handouts. Bitter that you did not make the grade to become what ever it is you failed at. BTW - Why is it that your "uncle's" blog, modestly called the British Comet Research Society (BCRS) seems to be:
- A blog by one person who uses a lot of US terminology and numeric conventions.
- Has a first post and web presence on Sept 18, 2013.
- In fact, there is no record of the "BCRS" existing outside of that blog. It's as if it were an invention (a fantasy as it were) of the blogger.
- And while it doesn't seem to promote ISON doom, it does have some very childish errors for a blog written by "scientists". It seems more like a blog written by a 15 year old.

If you can provide any links to the BCRS outside of that blog and showing it to be in existence a year or more ago I would be surprised.
Since you steadfastly refuse to answer any questions I expect this will be ignored in true kOOk fashion also.
***************************************

You say in the above quoted post, "The figures are not my own and I do not know how they came to those, but I have no reason to doubt them."
And here we see you state, "Ison has a diameter of 3km and a mass of aprox 3,175,146,590 kg"
[link to www.godlikeproductions.com]

You quote those numbers and yet refuse to do the 30 second calculation to determine an estimated density.
In fact, anyone with any knowledge of astronomical objects would take one look at those figures and recognise them for the idiocy they are.
No "astrophysicist" would say they "have no reason to doubt them." There is such an huge error that even an amateur would come to a screeching halt upon reading them.
***************************************

As to who I am to question you... I am a GLP member putting your juvenile role-playing feet to the fire.
What does "qualify yourself" even mean?
What do I have to qualify myself as?
I can assure you that I have qualified myself and found myself to be of the highest quality... smart, handsome, dashing & debonaire.
***************************************

Now answer some questions Mr. "Harmonica Astropyzzzycyst".
Try the easy one first - ISON's density from the numbers 'you don't doubt.'
I'm betting you'll dodge the question again because in your case I actually do believe you are truly 15 years old and incapable of doing even this simple calculation.
Other times when I make this statement it is merely used as an implied simile, but in your case it is actually true, I believe.
Done with you until you produce the density which a 7th grader could calculate.

I have explained what I do, I have explained what project I am working on, I have put forward papers explaining the basis for our research.

My question to you again,

Who are you to question me, qualify yourself to judge me

I think you are a college drop out, probably living in mummy's basement, living off her handouts. Bitter that you did not make the grade to become what ever it is you failed at. You now spend your days/nights sat behind a screen, harassing people online in a vain attempt to feel a little better for the years of bullying that you obviously went though, and to take your mind off the pathetic loser you have become.

You'll excuse my late reply, wanted to get answers for all your questions.

1. It is NOT my uncles blog, it is however the blog of an association he helped found in 1979 and is still a member. My unle is in his late 70's and thinks computers are witchcraft. The webmaster and main author is Chris Harwood.

2. US terminology, unaware of this. I did notice a couple of American spellings, I assume this is a spell check error. I am assured that Chris is English, not American. Please demonstraight the US terminology and why this is important to you?

2.5. US Numeric conventions, surely someone as "intelligent" as yourself must be aware that in the UK we use both metric and imperial measurements? Hence KM & Miles.

3. Blog was started to answer all the doom-monger sites which claim Ison will destroy the earth, this was decided after the McNaught comet rumors.

4. The bcrs is a small group of amateur astronomers around 30 in total and do not have a website.

5. It does the exact opposite of "promoting Ison Doom" What are the errors? Having looked I see nothing of note. It is written in a style for non astronomers, which as I understand, is the reason it was set up, to easy the minds of the general public with no astronomy experience.

I did quote those numbers, I made a mistake and Ison's diameter should have read 5km.
I did not check density using these numbers, but have now done so. I calculate the density using Isons size 5km and mass of 3,175,146,590 kg I make Isons density to be 48.5g/m3. Do you agree?
I admit when I saw this figure I was a little surprised, I am not a comet expert and have never claimed to be, but expected it to be much higher.

I questioned my uncle on this. The model for calculating Isons mass was based research carried out on the Shoemaker levy comet by the Los Almos national laboratory doi:10.1038/370349a0. If you a not familiar with this work, they calculate the average comet density to be 50g/m3.

Yes, 0.048513 kg/m^3 is the correct answer using the numbers given by your blog.

Apparently you don't know, Mr. Harmonica Astrophyzzzycyst, that the density of Air is ~1.3 kg/m^3 which is about 27 times as dense as your "comet"...
Indeed, all children who have attended high school know that water has a density of ~1.0 gr/cc = 1000 kg/m^3
Water is about 21000 times as dense as your "comet"...
And yet you seem nonplussed by the impossible density you calculated for the comet; a density a child would know is wrong.

What you have just revealed by uncritically citing that density ("48.5g/m3") is that you have less scientific knowledge than a high school student.

You have confirmed my suspicion... you are 15 years old and have yet to attend high school.

You are most certainly not a scientist or an "astrophysicist". (snicker)
QED.

No "astrophysicist" would say they "have no reason to doubt them." There is such an huge error that even an amateur would come to a screeching halt upon reading them."

Perhaps you could explain to the good people at GLP what YOU estimate Ison's mass to be, and why it differs to the model by the Los Alamos national laboratory. What is it that you know and they dont? I belivie they have "knowledge of astronomical objects" and that they would not "take one look at those figures and recognise them for the idiocy they are"
Maybe you should email the with YOUR revised figures and mark you email "There is such an huge error that even an amateur would come to a screeching halt upon reading them."

<Snip more defensive BS from the troll.>

Your resposne is eagerly awaited......

You said, "I did not check density using these numbers, but have now done so. I calculate the density using Isons size 5km and mass of 3,175,146,590 kg I make Isons density to be 48.5g/m3. Do you agree?"

(snicker)
QED.

Done with you.
Role-playing tard.

Oh dear me.......

Once again for your information it is NOT my blog

OK, lets start with your response to the density.

You really have shown your lack of schooling and lack of knowledge of scientific principles here, let me correct you.

The density of air is in fact 1.2754 kg/m3 at 0'c at sea level. This is the standard SI unit for defining the density of air.

The reason that sea level is important is because of atmospheric pressure, which increases density. (If you don't understand get a grown up to explain it to you)

Now in space there is no atmospheric pressure, once you leave our atmosphere the density of air becomes almost 0.

Now you completely ignored the research carried out by the Los Alamos national laboratory on which this estimate was based, even though I included the doi number ( doi:10.1038/370349a0) so you could search for and read the paper for yourself. I can only assume you did not under stand it, it did have big words in it so I will excuse you.

Now why do the highly respected Los Alamos national laboratory think comet density is so low?
As I am sure you are not aware, comets are made up, not just of "ice" but of gasses such as hydrogen and methane.

Hydrogen has a density of 0.082kg/m3 on earth but in space where there is no atmosphere we do not use kg/m3 instead we use particle density. The particle density of hydrogen in a 1 metre cube is 40,000 each particle has an AMU (atomic mass unit) of 1 (remember it is the least dense element). When converted to kg this works out at aprox 0.000000000000000000064 kg/m3.

Methane has a density of 0.656 kg/m3 on earth. Again like all gasses it has around 40,000 particles/m3 in space due to the lack of atmosphere. This works out to be in the region of 0.000000000000000000384 kg/m3.

Once again it was not I who estimated the density of Ison.
It was not my research that created the model of comet density it was the Los Alamos national laboratory. If you do not agree with it that's cool, but throwing insults at me for it is very childish.

You put some effort in to your last post, not a lot but some, well done you!
But......

You correctly quoted the density of water, congrats!
However, water does not exist in space!
You should have quoted the density of ICE which is 917 kg/m3. Any elementary school child could have told you that ice is less dense that water, they could have also have told you that water can not exist in space.

I have never edited your posts when quoting them, I have left them whole and as written, to show you for the fool you are.

You however edit mine to remove the parts that show your lack of knowledge, and demonstrate mine. dont worry I will put my judgement of you back in this post.

I have answered ALL of your questions.
I asked only one.
You have not answered it, you "sir" are a coward.

You have shown your true colours on this thread, it has been a treat to watch your arrogance tear you apart.

I have tried to help people and answer their questions. Other people have doubted what I have said, that is fine, I relish the chance to explain to them. I have engaged many in conversation and debated with them. With the exception of you, I have been treated fairly, politely and with respect.
You came on this thread and started throwing insults.

I now know that you have a reputation for this. You are an uneducated troll, who's jealousy causes you to lash out at others, scared that the "bigger boys" will beat you up for this, you do it from behind a computer.

I judge you, and I judge you as this:
I think you are a college drop out, probably living in mummy's basement, living off her handouts. Bitter that you did not make the grade to become what ever it is you failed at. You now spend your days/nights sat behind a screen, harassing people online in a vain attempt to feel a little better for the years of bullying that you obviously went though, and to take your mind off the pathetic loser you have become. I see you as of 30-40 year old virgin, comic book guy type.

Did I hit the mark?
I think so, this is why you edited it out.

I have answered your questions, now answer mine......
I have only asked you one, you have never answered, qualify yourself.

Your response is eagerly awaited......

I would encourage anyone reading this to go back to the begining of the thread and read though "reality420" comments.

Re: Latest photo shows Ison HAS changed direction!!!!
I questioned my uncle on this. The model for calculating Isons mass was based research carried out on the Shoemaker levy comet by the Los Almos national laboratory doi:10.1038/370349a0. If you a not familiar with this work, they calculate the average comet density to be 50g/m3.

 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 47149780

I think you mean .5g/cm3
Or 500 kg/m3

So a plausible density for Ison is probably more around .485 g/cm3 or 485 kg/m3.

I'm not certain of this, but these figures seem more realistic to me.
