Re: Latest photo shows Ison HAS changed direction!!!!
I questioned my uncle on this. The model for calculating Isons mass was based research carried out on the Shoemaker levy comet by the Los Almos national laboratory doi:10.1038/370349a0. If you a not familiar with this work, they calculate the average comet density to be 50g/m3.

 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 47149780

I think you mean .5g/cm3
Or 500 kg/m3

So a plausible density for Ison is probably more around .485 g/cm3 or 485 kg/m3.

I'm not certain of this, but these figures seem more realistic to me.
 Quoting: Setheory 22372062

Yeah, the kid found this quick Googling to sound like he knew what he was talking about:
[link to www.nature.com]
and read this:
"I determine an average comet density of about 0.5gcm-3"
Then his little grade school pea brain did this:
"Let's see, how many grams per cubic meter?
Oh, there's 100 cm per meter so just multiply by 100.
0.5 g/cm^3 times 100 is 50.0 g/m^3"

The tard thinks you multiply cm^3 by 100 to get m^3.
That should be an exclamation mark that you're dealing with an uneducated child who has yet to attend high school.

So Setheory, still think you are dealing with an adult?
One who thinks ice has a density 2000 times that of a comet?
One who thinks you just multiply cc's by 100 to get cubic meters?

The reason I'm coming down so hard on this childish troll is he is playing an old troll game...

Be a kOOk with your own delusions and agenda to promote those delustions.
Come in and cozy up to the debunkers/rationalists and do some debunking yourself of something you aren't concerned with, thereby gaining credibility with them.
Pussyfoot around with your loony delusion.
When the time comes, unleash your idiocy in all its glory.
(See GeorgeB and his method with chemtrails... try to look rational then unleash the crazy)

Seen it all before... a lot on sci.astro with a slightly different twist.

I'm done discussing with the troll...

Have fun.

Nicola Scaffeta: Evidences for a planetary modulation of total solar irradiance and the TSI signature of the 1.09-year Earth-Jupiter conjunction cycle

 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 47149780

OK, this paper is pretty interesting. The data “may” show that there is some relationship between TSI and the Earth-Jupiter conjunction cycle. I’m not convinced, but still interesting.

Out of curiosity, I plotted the orbits of the planets for May of 2014 and there is no Jupiter - Earth conjunction for that month. Actually, I found nothing “harmonically” <giggle> interesting at all. The date I would think might be worthy of note is January 5th, 2014.

Go here: [link to www.solarsystemscope.com]

And input January 5th, 2014. That is the next conjunction and it may be around solar maximum. Additionally, you have Venus in the mix as well.

Note: I wanted to input the date of September 1st 1859 out of curiosity, but it only went back to 1900. I can do it on my home computer, but I am at work. So Dr. Astro or Reality420, if you read this and have a simulator handy, please plot that date just for shits and grins…….
 Quoting: Setheory 22372062

OK, after running the simulator for the date of September 1st, 1859 (The Carrington Event) I have established that there was not a Jupiter-Earth conjunction. That being said, I was surprised to see that there was a rare alignment of planets on that date. Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars and Saturn were in almost perfect alignment on the day of that solar storm. Please note that Jupiter accounts for about 73% of the gravitational influence on our sun and it was not part of this alignment. However, I had to laugh when I found that 4 of the 5 planets that have the most gravitational influence on the sun happened to be in alignment on that date.

An interesting coincidence.
 Quoting: Setheory 22372062

OOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHH

That is interesting.....

Now I haven't heard them talking about the event with relation to planetary alignment, only cycles. But the fact that you have maximus and alignment happening at the same time, is a little worring....
 Quoting: Carbon_8

I found it to be an interesting coincidence, but not at all worrying. As I said, while I think that it “may” be plausible that the tidal effects of the planets upon the sun could potentially affect TSI, this effect would have to be negligible IMO.

I read/browsed some of the other papers you listed and found them to be interesting reading. While I wouldn’t call them pseudoscience, I think they are controversial and don’t necessarily represent the best work in that field. That is my opinion and admittedly I’m no expert in solar dynamics. One interesting takeaway was that it would seem we don’t have a solid understanding just how sensitive the solar dynamo is. Until we achieve that understanding, I think we will continue to see many “alternative” theories such as these.

Well spotted, I correct myself in a post half way down the page as I could not edit the page.

Personally I would have guessed a comet's density to be in the region of 1500kg/m3 based on it being a mixture of ice and rock, but just a guess.

Did you get a chance to look though those papers?

Sorry I must have been typing my last post when you posted this!

I was only in for before lunch today so didn't get to talk to anyone much, but was basically laughed at when I asked about planetary alignment. Strange as this is basically what we are examining in relation to effects on our weather systems!
I questioned the event happening in may, asking if it might be in January to an strong no, may. I'm in all day wednesday so hope to question them further.

Glad you had a chance to read though the papers and thank you for the very balanced input. Having read them now I must admit I am less skeptical! They certainly present a different view, but I would not go as far as controversial but definitely alternative! They are not being treated as fact, if they were what would be the point in researching it! Are you familiar with kepler problem? I was told today to apply it to scaffeta. It's been a few years since we did kepler, so more reading .....

Actually your correction was as follows:

"Sorry masses should have read 480g/m3 and 500g/m3"

Those aren't "masses", they are densities and they should have been in kg instaed of g, so it wasn't really a correction.

I don't see how his work could be anything other than controversial.

I know what the Kepler problem is and I may have had to do some of those calculations in University Astronomy classes, but that was a couple decades ago. Use it or lose it as they say.

Ask them what part of Scaffeta’s work it should be “applied to”.

I can promise you it's not my blog, but I am curious to my "tell"

 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 47149780

Well, one of the first things I noticed when conversing with you was the fact that you used an overabundance of exclamation points. It really stood out because they were not only overused, but really applied improperly and out of context. Examples of your posts below:

“Ok had to be careful asking to many questions, but managed to get some reading homework!
Please have a read and give me your opinions!
Thanks Astro!

I never turn down green!
Sorry I must have been typing my last post when you posted this!

I was only in for before lunch today so didn't get to talk to anyone much, but was basically laughed at when I asked about planetary alignment. Strange as this is basically what we are examining in relation to effects on our weather systems!
Having read them now I must admit I am less skeptical! They certainly present a different view, but I would not go as far as controversial but definitely alternative!”

That being said, when I went to this site [link to cometison.blogspot.co.uk] the other day, I noticed the exact same thing in regards to exclamation points. Here is an excerpt from that site:

“Simple as that really!
Hundreds of thousands of astronomers all over the world are watching and tracking Ison though the solar system, we know where it is, where its going and when it will be there.
All of us are in agreement that Ison WILL NOT hit the earth, it wont even come close!
Now the conspiracy theorists will be screaming cover up at the top of their voices, but if there really was a comet on a collision course with earth it would be impossible to cover up! There are simply to many people watching it for any government or organisation to cover it up. Don't trust us, fair enough, but let me put it like this........
I can see Ison, I can track Ison, if I thought for just one second that there was any chance what so ever that Ison could strike the earth, would I be wasting my remaining days writing this?
NO!!! I would be digging the deepest bunker I could, as fast as I could, and so would every other astronomer on the planet..... the day you see a guy with a telescope in one hand and a shovel in the other, that's the day to panic!”

So you see it’s the exact same tendency or “tell” if you will. Now if you consider the fact that you have been active on two threads (on GLP) and your initial post on each of those threads contain links to this very site, it seems very obvious as to what is going on. You have to admit this seems rather strange no?

Not silent just went out last night.

Thank you for your explanation, your point with the exclamation points is interesting, but have led you to the wrong conclusion. (I would have put a ! at the end of the last sentence but am making a point of not using them in this post.)

Most people I know, myself included use exclamation points over-enthusiastically, it's more of a friendly thing, like a smiley. I had never realised until a Canadian tutor pointed it out a couple of years ago that most of the UK do it (and Spanish apparently). Having looked at your examples, with it pointed out I have over used them to the point of being comical, but please be aware it was done as a friendly gesture. I can see how you would consider this a "tell"

That really is not my site though, but I am connected to somone (my uncle) who is connected to it's author and I have never denied this, if fact stated it repeatedly. I will even admit that I was asked to "mention it to my mates". I was on here the following day (or the day after that maybe) and I saw an ison thread at the top of the board. People were posting all sorts of nonsense about the comet, in particular saying about a NASA conspiracy. I have been a lurker on glp for a while now but only posted a couple of times as a Anon. With the request to spread the word about the site in my mind I decided to put my opinion in and include a link to a site independent of NASA. I also backed you up, with information pulled from the site. Was this shameless promotion, maybe a little, I admit I set up an account to appear more legit which I have never done before.

When I was on the site I noticed the picture on the top post, it was ison pointed in the opposite direction to most other photos and decided to start this thread to wind up certain members, in particular Astro. This was done in an extremely good natured way, for a laugh. This thread was certainly in no way intended to be a promotion, I didn't even expect it to get past page one.

So is all of this a advertising stunt? If it were it would be a pretty shit one. The time I've spent answering unrelated questions, responding to trolls and defending myself would not have been a good use of my time if it was about promotion. Did I flood this site with links? Were any of the links out of place/context? Have I not answered peoples questions and offered to get answers if I dint know them? Did I start up loads of threads? Did I not link it with reference to questions that had been asked? Is a conspiracy forum the best place to advertise a serious website? Did I ever deny my connection? Did I not state my connection from the 1st post? Do I have anything to gain by denying owning the site?

Once again, for the record:
It is not my site.
I have not written any material on this site.
I do not know the author/webmaster of the site.
I have nothing to gain financially by promoting this site and as far as I know, no-one does.

Just so we're clear it's 3:25am in the UK as I type this, I'm going to bed now, my silence until tomorrow does not mean anything other than being tired.
