Nope...just a college student with some basic knowledge

All the EQ's in Cali, for the most part, have been below 2.0...

I know that is rather insignificant in comparison to the strong EQ's that we have been dealing with (Pakistan, Peru), but it is the staggering number which have occurred that made me concerned

I think something is up as well. I monitor the west coast quakes about once an hour and have not seen it this quiet... well, ever. Lots of tiny quakes but there would normally be some 2.5's and 3's all over the west coast. This is very strange.. and unsettling.

Orange County here OP, nothing shaking yet! It's common for California to have lots of small 1-2 mag quakes everyday.

But I admit I'm concerned because the Ring of Fire has been brutal everywhere else except California.

I saw this on another thread...crazy that this type of thing is possible, but we do live in a very unusual time

Nahhh, it's actually appeared to be in major uptick the past 2 weeks or so - I check it more than once a day for years, living in So Cal myself - this is a pretty big uptick - but I am seeing that worldwide, so it seems to me, anyway, to be a planetary thing

Not Normal. Above average. They have happened before but we just had 2 big quakes and the Yellow Stone Ones were recorded at the same time.

3. Small earthquakes are helpful because they release pressure and prevent larger ones.

The earthquake magnitude scale, introduced by Charles Richter in 1935, is logarithmic, which means that progressively bigger quakes are a lot bigger than smaller quakes. For each unit increase in magnitude (i.e., going from 5.5 to 6.5), the energy released rises by a factor of about 30 — meaning that a two-unit increase translates into aquake that is nearly 1,000 times as severe. If enough stress has built up on a fault to generate a magnitude-7.0 earthquake, say, it would thus take about 1000 earthquakes with a magnitude of 5.0 to release the equivalent energy. The Earth doesn’t work that way.

In any given area, the numbers of tremors of different magnitudes almost always follow a simple mathematical progression, with about 10 magnitude-6.0 quakes and about 100 magnitude-5.0 quakes for every single magnitude-7.0 quake. Thus, if there is significant strain energy to be released, it must be released in large earthquakes.

I have been watching the seismic readings for Yellowstone as well and found them very peculiar.

And in reference to the 2 big quakes comment, isn't there supposed to be some rule of triangulation of EQs? Meaning that, are we supposed to have a 3rd "big one" somewhere to complete the cycle with the EQs in Pakistan and Peru?

Has anyone ever heard of that "rule"?

And if so, what geographically makes the most sense for the location of the next big one?

The question is what is normal for a geologic system 100's of millions years old ( cali), and your trying to put it in context of records that have been kept about a hundred years.

Sounds like slow tension building up. Comet Elinin (spelled that wrong I am sure) just passed through which would have caused Pakistan and Peru. That pull may be causing more tension in the plates. I don't care what anyone says. Those comets passing through always result in new quakes or eruptions. Elinin always produces quakes for some odd reason.
