the brits bankrolled the north because the usa would be too strong of an empire if it had that much labor for free
Quoting: Anonymous Coward 16438338 brits bankrolled both sides and with the north winning, they were able to collect the debts from the south even up until 1939 [ link to www.newser.com] interesting....although i don't consider that to be traditional 'debt' as in borrowed money debt-- money borrowed to purchase the weapons and finance the war itself
