Greece's Golden Dawn leader Nikolaos Mihaloliakos arrested, rest of the party to be rounded up today

The leader of Golden Dawn gets in custody until the day of their trial.
If you ask me all this is a distraction from the economical problems we have here. Not that it is not an important issue but we nearly talk about nothing else here but the Golden Dawn.

How gangster are they really?

Bumps.

They have formed a kind of militia, they exercise with globs and guns and body to body fighting, they are accused of many attacks mostly against foreigners, they have killed a couple and they attack anyone who says something against them. From what I hear they are involved in blackmails in order to take money and people have used them as "police" when they want to punish or get rid of someone (mostly foreigners).
They walk in the neighborhoods like military troops (we have videos on how they appear in open markets etc). Many people fear them.

Pretty full on. But obviously the powers that be see them as a threat and want to rid them yeah? Or are they legit high end elites?

I think they let them grow and "used" them while they were not so strong, but when they started to have simple people following them and vote for them etc and the attacks stopped been limited to illegal immigrants or to immigrants in general they realised how dangerous they could become.

When i say used them, i mean that the government let them policing around, not that they actually gave them orders.

I feel they will continue to grow.

Surely with all the media attention it also creates underground growth and will be back bigger and stronger in a year or so.. . .?

I dont know, many people followed them because of two main reasons. One is that we had a lot of crimes from immigrants this last decade and the government didnt act quickly to protect the people (they did act lately though)
The other is that with all this political and financial mess we are in, people tend to follow anyone who claims that are not corrupted (or will not be in the future), who will punish the ones that are and promise ways to fix the mess.

I know the name Golden Dawn makes me very suspious of this group.
