The polls are behind the times. I, and my family travel some outside the US and since the invasion of Afghanistan by the US, US citizens have had to cover the azzz from Europeans and citizens of other countries who travel in Europe and Canada.

I can't image that US Americans have to deal with if they're traveling in the Mid-East.




Little souviner stores stay sold out of "Canada" and maple leaf stickers because Americans buy them to put on their luggage or coats to make-believe they are from Canada.

Troubel for me, my US Southern accent gives me away as what Europeans refer to as the "Beverly Hillbillies".

In 1999, most europeans, new zealanders and australians I met while visiting europe had the same opinion. They said american arrogance was disturbing and they did not like the way we treated other people throughout the world.

Not surprising, businesses have taken over the US government and then these american businesses have forced themselves into other countries without regard for the people therein.

Since 2000 (read BUSH ET AL) this has worsened as we've been more and more aggressive regarding everything held dear to most people on earth - peace, justice, freedoms, etc. While they may not have had them, we've further denied them to the rest of the world by de-stabilizing the middle east and war-mongering in general.

American people have not responded to the atrocities committed in their names, media to blame somewhat, however, most americans have the ability to read the internet and choose not to. As for the war with Iraq, until the draft is begun, most americans are not affected by it. Only those families who have members that are repeatedly called up to fight (I have) are apt to look at this war in a negative way. Talking to people does not even work.. Americans, in general, are stupid, do not question authority, are greedy, and they will get what they deserve sooner rather than later if they allow this apathy of theirs to continue.

I am ashamed to be an american at this point in time.

Why would anyone like America at this point? The government funds a horrible mafia style bank called the IMF and also it's friend called the World Bank designed to bankrupt and control local economies...they manipulate governments or operate through local traitors of the day.

When economic control is avoided the friends of US intelligence uses assassination, military coups and other host of repressive measures to gain power over victim states...when those tactics fail, they use military supremicy to gain power, either directly through the US military or through a local proxy which is US supplied.

Life in the twentieth century was difficult for most citizens of the third world...but life in the 21st is a real bitch...case book, Iraq.

When I was in Argentina in 1993, the people there were very Anti-American...they asked us where we were from and said, "ahh, I knew it.." when we said Estados Unidos, they told us we could eat there or they would still take us whereever, but they wanted to let us know they did not like the US at all, and wanted to at least say that much to us. I was young, and I dared to ask why? They said, life here is very hard, and it is this way, because the US supported the military dictatorship and that ruined our country.

To boot, the American people seldom know anything about the state of world affairs...they travel in total ignorance, and would have nothing to say to a rude Argentine about politics, but would certainly tell their friends about it. And that is what we all hear isn't it?

The American people know only what they see on local telivision, though perhaps that is changing with the advent of the internet, things have a long way to go.

I wonder how much people know of international affairs in America...but then I remember...I remember a friend in high school told me it wasn't until she was 14 that she even knew what Los Angeles was...in terms of state, city or Country. Another guy in college once asked me if Europe was a single country or a group of different countries, and I said, oh you mean like how you hear about France and Britton being in Eurpoe, and then Europe being one counrty? He said yes, and waited for my answer...I told him that those were the 'old' countries and that Eurpope had been formed into a union about a hundred years ago, just after WWII. He nodded and said, that's just what I thought.

Maybe in part, it's the simple idea that the most powerful and ruthless nation on Earth can be so rich in materiality and yet so full of such a bunch of compliant fools...fools who have heard the rumors of ruthless brutality, but are so willing to ignor that potential truth.

250,000 dead civilian Iraqis...killed by American bombs! And yet, our government employees will lie about it all, and spin it to such an extent as to be a joke...and the people believe...and they are not just a joke anymore...they are a passive race of demons willingly led to commit horendous acts of evil...some of which the world has seldom seen, but the extent of which the world has never seen. A secret empire spans the globe and people wonder why cabbies and waiters the world over will be rude to them...or worse yet, they wonder why such common people will go along with insurgents and revolutionaries in the kidnapping of honest tourists. The families of the 250,000 dead Iraqis will never forget what America did to them.

I worked for years in a downtown Montreal hotel, at the reception.(Holiday Inn) In the summertime when the tourist would arrive, the US tourists, we would just groan and grit our teeth...I have to say that a small minority had "class", not the money kind of class mind you. Most Americans were loud, arrogant and obnoxious, but I have to admit that they reminded me a bit of the bunch of Quebequers, the Elvis Gratton's, we call them here, that go to Florida in winter and Old Orchard beach in the summer...the ones Americans talk about...I'm not saying that they aren't all good people, just that, generally speaking they are just "ignorant"

When you read things like this, and I also heard it discussed on a TV Channel from France, well, imagine the opinion they can have of Americans. They probably think citizens know about this and accept it.

The problem is ANY American has the ability to KNOW about all of these things, they just CHOOSE not to. That is the indefensible part.

"The biggest story of the Iraq war is about the torture of Iraqi children.

A German TV magazine called 'Report Mainz' recently aired accusations from the International Red Cross, to the effect that over 100 children are imprisoned in U.S.- controlled detention centers, including Abu Ghraib. "Between January and May of this year, we've registered 107 children, during 19 visits in 6 different detention locations," said Red Cross representative Florian Westphal in the report.

The report also outlined eyewitness testimony of the abuse of these children. Staff Sergeant Samuel Provance, who was stationed at Abu Ghraib, said that interrogating officers had gotten their hands on a 15 or 16 year old girl. Military police only stopped the interrogation when the girl was half undressed. A separate incident described a 16 year old being soaked with water, driven through the cold, smeared with mud, and then presented before his weeping father, who was also a prisoner.

Seymour Hersh, the New Yorker reporter who first broke the story of torture at Abu Ghraib, recently spoke at an ACLU convention. He has seen the pictures and the videotapes the American media has not yet shown. "The boys were sodomized with the cameras rolling, and the worst part is the soundtrack, of the boys shrieking," said Hersh. "And this is your government at war."

Hersh described the prison scene as, "a series of massive crimes, criminal activity by the president and the vice president, by this administration," and that there has been, "a massive amount of criminal wrongdoing that was covered up at the highest command out there, and higher."

Reports of abuses at Abu Ghraib and other American prisons have been public knowledge since the release of the Taguba Report. Recently, however, some 106 annexes to the report, previously classified, have also been released. U.S. News and World Report detailed the sum of what is contained in these annexes in an article titled 'Hell on Earth.'

In it, U.S. News says, "The abuses took place, the files show, in a chaotic and dangerous environment made even more so by the constant pressure from Washington to squeeze intelligence from detainees. Riots, prisoner escapes, shootings, corrupt Iraqi guards, unsanitary conditions, rampant sexual misbehavior, bug-infested food, prisoner beatings and humiliations, and almost-daily mortar shellings from Iraqi insurgents--according to the annex to General Taguba's report, that pretty much sums up life at Abu Ghraib." According to coalition intelligence officers cited in a Red Cross report from last May, between 70% to 90% of Iraqi detainees held in these prisons were arrested "by mistake." That means they were innocent."
