The Dragon of LOTR Smaug is described as "a most specially greedy, strong and wicked worm".

As this is Smaug, Saxon Dragons where mostly known as bad Omens and where the cause of most major natural disasters.. I think the earliest reference to a comet in the Anglo-Saxon chronicles refers to it as Dragons Breath and that it brought famine to the land..

when i first read LOTR i thought Smaug and Sauron were the same person

I believe they are. If you see Tolkien's illustration of Sauron, it kinda looks like a comet.

I don't think so, Sauron was a vampire in Dol Guldur at the time. I also suspect that Gandalf and the Balrog were the same person, and Tom Bombadil and Morgoth though i don't have any proof.
